Update on Open Technical Problems

Hi all,

Here is the status of the current known technical issues related to the R2 release:

* Inability to Save Entries
After investigation, the tech folks found that there are two separate, but related problems in authentication that is causing users (both in the US and abroad) to not be able to save entries to their Journals.

These
problems are primarily affecting Journalers using the AOL client
software, because it involves how the new authentication scheme sees
AOL client users.

It wasn't discovered in testing because if you
authenticate successfully externally and later test from inside the
client, you won't see the problem.

The presence of two distinct
problems explains why the procedure of clearing one's browser cache and
footprint works for some people, but doesn't work for others.

The tech folks are working on installing a fix. I will let you know when it goes in.

* Inaccurate Entry Counts in Monthly Archives
The
number of entries that show up in the monthly view of your archives may
be inaccurate. For example, here is what I see when I look at my archives:

Magic Smoke Entry Archive Miscount

It's
only showing one or two entries per month. The tech folks think it may
be a database mismatch and are working on the problem.

* Character Sets Not Displaying Correctly
Certain
character sets are not showing up right. This means that letters with
accents, umlauts, tildes and other modifiers will not display properly.
This is obviously affecting International Journalers in a big way. Here
is an example:

Charset

(That means "last entries", incidentally.) I don't have an ETA of a fix yet.

If you're having Journals problems not listed here, please let me know. Thanks -- Joe

Do I get credit for time unable to be used?  I mean, it's all about revenue anymore, right?

Imagine that.  AOL clients using AOL client software.  What a novel idea.  I wouldn't have tested for it either.

That may be the reason, but it's certainly not an excuse for poor and inadequate testing.  NOT authenticating externally, if a possibility and something a user can do, is then obviously a test variation and should have been tested.  Sheesh!

Implement first; let the suckers test.  As long as they're paying our fee, we'll let them work for us.

AOL's business model.  Apparently.

hey....I don't think that is entries per month I think that is number of MONTHS.....if you notice we can now switch years.

I still hate the ads.

Notice how you have only been doing this journal since June 05 and thus you have no count for May or earlier...

Maybe I could get a job at AOL.

Now if you go to mine you'll see how I have been doing this here since Sep. 2003....

Okay, now it's "Holy Shite"! -I digress.

Unbelievable!!!

:::sigh::: And to think I was Hopeful when opening this post, go figure.

Thanks for all your help <...that's sarcasm in case the troll can't read.

What was Your Job again, I forget? "Oops" -your words, not mine...

Be truthful, Joe, are we (AOL Journals) being phased out?

Yes or No? Pleeeeeese,

I have heard alot of people speak about AIM. If it is true that AIM is free and you could keep your AOL journal with it, then couldn't AOL lose even more customers to AIM? Sounds like a real good loop hole to me. I was upset about all the saving chaos along with the ad banners at first, now I am over it. Every new system has problems in the beginning-it will be ironed out, I am sure of it. And the banners, well, we will just have to get used to it now won't we. There are alot of the popular journalers leaving and using blogger now; oh well, their loss. It just makes room for some new people to get a little fame now.

For those of us that signed up for some e-mail beta thing a long time ago, AOL has this self-serving message about eating their own ALPO before foisting a gigantic poo-chunk onto their customers.

So, the e-mail people got the pre-test memo.

You Journals people don't seem to be getting many memos, Joe.

Try this memo:

Joe, I think it is despicable that a few people arbitrarily decided to do something that  has fouled up entries ...Now do these people have the genius to prorate the amount of time others have lost trying to submit ... and how dare AOL to expect clients to empty their cache and go through other means to enter their journal on AOL which they are paying for? This entire episode is a nightmare ... I am so disappointed in AOL... I have been a member for 10 years and religiously paid my fees although I never logged on. Now I have found a home in J-Land ... my dream home ... and AOL Clients are sticking their banner ads in my front yard. This is illegal...you cannot convert my space for another's use... I am paying for my space. There will be a law suit against  AOL for conversion...using a persons property for their personal use ... they had no right! It is illegal to convert another's property for your personal use!!! This is a nightmare! Tell AOL to take the banners off as quickly as AOL surrepticiously put them on!!!    cMp

My cache is clean and I can't save entries. I'm feeling very cheated.

I think this is awful.  Not only do I have to squirrel around trying to find a way to journal, I have to suffer the advertising that IS illegal (thanks Courtney for your wisdom) on top of it.  It would have been courteous if AOL had sent us a memo and ways to post without having to pull our hair out...

...oh, and how come its so friggin' easy to save my entry to THIS journal??  I clicked 'Save' and viola!  Hmmmm....

I sincerely hope that the ad banner problem is being addressed.  J-Land's best bloggers are walking out.

FYI, authentication is not working on AOL UK journals either.

What about the alerts??  I'm still not getting any at all.  Not for when someone posts in mine and not when someone posts on their journal.  What's up with that?

I've got the last two problems. Clearing my cache fixed my inability to save.

Hee-hee, what funny names;  umlauts, tildes.  Sorry, I am trying to find humor where I can get in with AOL lately.

FYI, I was able to save entries in my journal after only clearing my cache. I did not clear my footprint (whatever that is), or rebuild my AOL adapter.
