Journals Editor's Mix of Six Picks

Yeah, that's me again.

Okay, I realize that it's completely self-serving, but since everything blew up this week and I didn't get a chance to go through the regular Guest Editor routine, and since everyone is already cheesed at me (including Jim, the most recent blog picker), I figured that it would just be easier
if I selected the featured blogs this week and not call them "Editor's
Picks" (even though some of them are quite good). So, here they are,
the Journals Editor's Mix of Six Picks:

(First off, if any of the AOL Journalers shown here don't want to be featured, just let me know and I will take your listing off. I have also sent out mails to that affect.)

In no particular order, here is my Mix of Six Picks:

* Marty's Stream of Warped Consciousness
Marty Gallagher is an interesting fellow. For a while, he was the fitness live-chat guy for Washingtonpost.com.
He's got a no-nonsense way of looking at fitness that boils down to
three elements (the classic "tripod"): weights, cardio and nutrition.
Sure, it's not original -- it's not supposed to be. But it works, and
he adds a certain elan that only a "Purposeful Primitive" who reads Chekov, hikes firetrails and rails against the show "The Biggest Loser" can bring. Oh, and this is his blog.

* Rebuke the World
I've been watching Raven's
blog for a while (and not just because she kept sending me mail every
time she updated her blog at the outset -- I don't recommend that).
She's been blogging since March, and she originally started out
focusing on giving advice. Her style was a little rough (I hope
she doesn't mind me saying), but in her later posts, you can see her
branching out to topics of philosophy, religion, politics, race and
more. All pretty heady stuff, well presented. Not to say I agree with
everything she says, but isn't that the way it usually is?

* Digg.com
This one is kind of a cheat,
since I was planning on doing an entry just on this site, anyway. It's
not like they need the publicity -- Digg is a collective links blog
that's on a pace to out-Slashdot Slashdot. The Digg difference is that articles get to the front page, not by the decisions of some editorial board, but because they're voted
on by the participants. So far, so good -- I see a diverse mix of
links, from techy stuff, current events, tabloid stuff. It's an
interesting exercise in collective wisdom and I will be writing
more about it and sites like it in the future, but just know now that
it's a good list of stuff that you can find before it hits the rest of
the blog echo chamber.

* Morality and the Law
Just on his job title alone sounds pretty impressive -- he's a Probate Referee for the Superior Court of California -- but Stephen
looks at issues of morality and legality (and where the two realms
cross and part). Naturally, since he's looking at such complex topics,
his posts can be rather lengthy, but they're fascinating reading --
very absorbing and well written, in logically organized and
easy-to-digest chunks.

* The History of Theodore Barnes by Nelson Pierce
Honestly, I'm a little leery about looking at teen blogs. Yes, I know: No one understands you
and what you're going through. Plus, stylewise, a lot of teens prefer
eye-bending colors, teeny low-contrast fonts, and lots of flashy
sparkly animated images -- probably because they know adults can't read
them easily (damn their young eyes!) Anyway, none of that applies to Hannah, who seems to be a relatively well-adjusted senior, despite the odd blog name. Oh, and one of her recent entries suggests she's a fan of  Pearls Before Swine, so she's got that going for her.

* Untitled States
Last,
but not least...well, it's not even a blog, but I'm pretty sure the
editor will let this one slide. At first, it may not seem like much --
it's just an interactive Web site that lets you add your own text to
template images, which you can then drop into your blog. For example:

noparking

That in itself is cool, but there are other sites that do that kind of stuff. However, the proprietor of the site is Lore Sjoberg (there should be an umlaut over that o in "Sjoberg"), and he deserves a lifetime achievement award just for what he did as a founder of the now-defunct (but archived) Brunching Shuttlecocks.

So
that's my five. I mean six. I could bore you with more of my bloggy Web
picks, but that's it for now. If you're still reading this, thanks for
indulging me. I especially enjoyed the chance to do some writing today
that didn't include the words "I'm sorry."

Have a good weekend everybody. -- Joe

I've been reading Hannah's blog since she was featured in CarnivAOL last week.  She's an extraordinarily good writer, with interesting things to say and a fun way of saying them.  Yay, Hannah! - Karen

I never said I was "cheesed" at you.  I know this wasn't your decision.  All of my disappoinment is directed toward the people above you, the ones that are hiding behind their cloak of whatever it is they think they have that allows them to ignore us.  And a good deal of that feeling is because they have hung you and John out to dry.

You have no idea how wonderful it was last week when my picks first went up.  I had such a great weekend going back and forth with folks here that I had not had a chance to speak with before.  Two days later: BOOM! It all goes away.  And that'd not to say any of this is about me.  It's not.  It's about the creativity and brilliance of a lot of people and the fact that for whatever unknown reason, executives decided to take a can of spray paint to their canvases.  It's wrong, and I could never look at myself in the mirror if I did not speak up with them.

Interesting choices and, as someone before me observed, only half of them AOL Journals.  But can't you just imagine writing. or reading about, "Morality and the Law" while a dancing commercial flits across the top of the page?  How it cheapens and mocks the content of the Journal!

Anonymous said...

Excellent Choices. I am looking forward to checking them all out........
Thank you. Job Well Done.

My students hate - I mean HATE - that they have to take final exams on Saturdays.  I didn't make that decision.  I had no say in that decision.  But that decision was made anyhow.  Who gets the brunt of the anger?  Me.  Why?  Because I'm on the front lines.  I'm the one they see and have access to.  It's in my job description.  Do I like Saturday finals?  Hell no.  But at least I tell them WHY they're doing it.  Don't make it any more fun, but at least they know the why.

Jobs suck sometime.

I "sooo" want this over too, so that I can come home to my journal. Maybe someone at aol could get these ads out of my journal now. Love the top pic Joe. judi

I woke up to ads still on my journal Joe...... I know AOL is hoping we will just shut up, however, I have it from AOL sources that the best thing we can do is to continue our protest, and continue I shall.  My words and my thoughts and my photos are NOT for sale to the highest bidder.  AOL broke a trust with us.  We are holding them/you accountable.

When are the execs going to talk to us and when will this nightmare be over?

TODAY'S ENTRY:  SWAN SONG

Well, it was nice, Joe.  I enjoyed posting in your journal.  But mine has been returned to me as of last night.  The archives are still a mess and BOA still seems to think it has some kind of right to perch up there at the top, but at least I can post.  And maybe I will.  Or maybe not.  Or maybe I'll post to both blogs for awhile.

I expect there's a lot of ambivalence around town, but maybe not.  I seldom have my finger on the pulse of things.  My journal doesn't get much notice and I think I know why -- I'm usually completely out of it with respect to contemporary culture.  But some of the best writers around -- people who really care about words and expression -- visit me regularly, and I get to see what they are up to.  And it was a delight to be a Guest Ed Pick last week -- just before the s--t hit the fan and consigned me to oblivion again.

I looked around at some other journal sites last night and sure enough, there are ads all over the place -- which only served to remind me again of how easily I see past much of the junk that pollutes our space in general.  And I'm not so naive as to think that blogspot and typepad and livejournal might not someday do the same thing.  Perhaps they are plotting even as I speak.

But here's where there can be no ambivalence as I see it:  AOL, by providing no advance notice and no means or levels of choice,  showed contempt for its customers, a contempt magnified by the lack of reponse from the "higher-ups." And the tech problems demonstrated an astonishing level of incompetence.

Contempt for the customer and technological incomptence are not foundations upon which to maintain a successful business.  I had learned that from my very successful self-employed grandfather by the time I was five.  I would submit that aol has some major repair work to do.

Good luck, Joe.

Sheesh.  The last sentences of that last entry thanked you and John for keeping your cool and noted that it seems that you at least tried.  But for whatever reason, they didn't appear.  I rest my case.

YEA Robin..... I wish you would keep posting at Joe's, this has been one of the few amusing things in this week from hell. I still cannot post at my place... even if I wanted to.

Oceanmrc,

Interestingly, I cannot post to my AOL blog yet without using IE..... I refuse to go through a hundred technical hurdles to try and undo what AOL has broken.  They have broken so much more than their technology. They have broken their word and their trust.  I still vote for you to become a VP at AOL, or maybe even the CEO.  They certainly need new creativity, new ideas, and someone with high moral character, if they are going to do anything but sink into a deep hole of financial and business disaster.

Ironically, we all still want AOL to succeed.  We just cannot figure out why the execs cannot see their train is headed off the cliff.  I am not going over the cliff with them.

Peace,  Virginia

<<CNET editors' review
for AOL Journals

Review date: 6/2/05

Not wanting to miss out on the blogging juggernaut, AOL recently made its new blogging service, AOL Journals, available to the public (that is, non-AOL members). While AOL Journals has features similar to those of Blogger and TypePad, we found the presence of banner ads on the posted blogs distracting and not suitable for business use. If you want only to share your personal thoughts with friends, AOL Journals is good starting point, otherwise we recommend the paid service TypePad for professional-looking blogs. >>

AOL did not say whether the free service would eventually be populated with advertising. Currently, the home page for AOL Journals comes with ads, but the individual journal pages are largely ad-free. Hey, Joe!  Thanks for posting the pics of the week.  Hmm...so non J's.  Interesting.  But since I'm getting used to visiting elsewhere, I will go visit them too.

I even did my weekend assignment for John.

Lest you think the firestorm is over.  It isn't!  But hey, there seems to be a little more black humor and calmness than the last few days.  But don't let it fool ya', we're still all po'd.  And having our says.

While I am at:  I still can't save into my journal page without using MIE, despite following all the helpful hints and tips.  Spellcheck no longer works either.  :::sigh:::

I'm not sure if it will help, but I'm about ready to toss the laptop off of my deck and give up electronic communication altogher.  AOL, you have once again screwed me over.

Have a good day Joe.  I'm off to read.

Hello Joe..  This is just my way of letting you know that weather they admit it or not everyone knows what's happened "is not your fault, or John's fault".  You have been hung out to dry to take our anger and frustration.  I sure hope they pay you well for it because I know what it can do to your feeling about yourself when enough of this occurs, and it ain't nice.

I still hold out hope for a small miracle from aol in hopes they reach out a hand to those "ready to leave/ already left".   I'm old, bear with me.. a small mircle is all they are asking.. everyone knows aol isn't going to give money back to take away the ads.  But making is much smaller and NON ANIMATED sure would help alot of us... so please keep passing on the angry and frustrated messages.. in this way you ARE helping us.

BTW.. knowing how alot feel right now, you don't want the sort of help they would offer LOL....

AOL severed the trust they once had with their paying customers who brought them here.  It's no wonder we're reading reports about how AOL is losing customers by the hundreds of thousands.

Dear Reader,

The banner ads on this journal are placed here without my consent.  I do not endorse any of the products being advertised here.  My journal was started more than a year before these advertisements became the headers on AOL Journals. This is an invasion, tantamount to theft.

There are many reasons why people keep journals.

I speak now on behalf of any and all who consider their journals to be hallowed ground, a place where their "secrets cry aloud."

I also speak on behalf of some who are dead and therefore cannot speak.  I speak for those who have left us their words, whose journals we visit as we would graves or memorials, whose journals have been defaced with ads.

This last entry I leave, as a testament to the sanctity of art.

This journal was once my "Open House."

To AOL:  We do our living, laughing, loving, and dying on these pages.  They are not billboards for advertisers.

To AOL:  You have defaced my house.

This entry will remain here, as testament of what you have done.

Hey everyone,

I just posted my very last entry on my AOL Journal, which I will leave there in perpetuity. I don't know if AOL is capable of feeling remorse or shame, but at least there will be some kind of record I left behind, showing how I feel about this situation.  I suggest that some of you leaving your journals to do the same.  The journal itself I will leave online for the time being.  I've had several people to ask me to keep it up because they want to use some of the entries and reader comments for reference.   Thanks to the J-Land community.  It's been wonderful getting to know you all.  I don't think there was a better, brighter, more active or caring internet community out there.  Be sure to let me know where you are. Interesting that you chose relatively non-updated AOL Journals and ones off of AOL.  With the way things are going, the best of AOL J-Land is moving off the service to other venues.  So, you'll surely find lots of great blogs on Blogspot and other blogging venues.  I realize it's not your fault and you'd probably personally prefer the whole brouhaha never got started.
But when is AOL going to actually listen to the voices of their customers?  When?  WE HATE BANNER ADS ON OUR PERSONAL JOURNALS AND DO NOT ENDORSE ANY OF THE COMPANIES FEATURED.  Hopefully, the advertisers themselves will be concerned about the negative publicity related to the ads.  Heck, maybe they'll care if AOL doesn't.

OH! And, by the way: This Update Sucks!!! I am now having Internet connections problems that never occured before the AOL's addition of these Spell Check "Options", go figure.......

I'm sorry for being a royal B**CH. But, I will scream in this comment thread until you SHOW US what's being done.

Very Sincerely,

I remember Brunching Shuttlecocks back in the day, especially for the Alanis Morrissette lyric generator. Appropriate.

"Why"

Dulles, Editor's, incompetent servers
Why God, Why?
Editor's, corporate slugs, AOL journal ads
Why God, Why?

What have I done to deserve this black horror?
Surrounded on all sides with the Hell of AOL journal ads
Like a William Faulkner character, I'm wordy and alone
Why God, Why?

Con artists, Dulles, guy in charge of ads
Why God, Why?
AOL journal ads, guy in charge of ads, incompetent servers
Why God, Why?

What have I done to deserve this black disaster that is my life?
Surrounded on all sides with the Hell of AOL journal ads
Like a William Faulkner character, I'm wordy and alone
Why God, Why?

What have I done to deserve this black misery?
Surrounded on all sides with the Hell of AOL journal ads
Like a William Faulkner character, I'm wordy and alone
Why God, Why?

Why God, Why?
Why God, Why?
Why God, Why?
Why God, Why?

I must chuckle at your "well-adjusted" comment in reference to myself, and subsequently, my blog. While I may not be one of those teens wrapped up in my own little world, crying for free-grade handouts and dressing in tasteless clothing, I have a hard time calling myself well-adjusted, when I don't even known what it is that I'm to be adjusted to. Society? I laugh in the face of that idea.

To make a long story short, I would love it if you could come on over and tell me exactly what it is that I'm well-adjusted -to-.

Oh, and thanks for the feature. It made a rather nice birthday present.
