This Is Not an Entry About the Ads

Okay folks, as the subject says, this isn't an entry where I will talk
about the 728x90 banner ads on Journals. I will post an entry a little
later this afternoon.

Right now, I just wanted you to be aware that I am reading your
comments and I'm not trying to duck
your questions, it's just that there is very little I can do about it
personally at the moment (other than pass your feedback up the chain of
command, not off to some e-mail dumping grounds). However, what I have
been doing is to trying to get the save entry
problems fixed.

I got a comment from randlprysock, where she describes a procedure using the AOL System Information utility to clear her cache, footprints and rebuild the AOL Adapter. Here is her blog entry: http://journals.aol.com/randlprysock/AdventuresFromFlorida/entries/1255

Since the procedure listed involves multiple steps, some that we've
mentioned before (clearing cache), some that we haven't (clearing
footprint and rebuilding the AOL Adapter) as well as rebooting the
computer, we can't be precisely sure which of the steps is the one that
does the trick (if it indeed does the trick).

If you try the listed procedures, it would be helpful if you can let us know if it worked for you or not.

As noted, I will talk about the ads in another entry later today.  Thanks -- Joe

Can you provide me with the name of anyone who has gotten feedback from Journal Changes @ AOL.com?

Nothing personal... just curious.

Unless you are going to apologize to all of us for AOL and say that the ads are going away immediately... there really isn't much to say that will make any difference at this point.  Damage done.  Customers fleeing.

I am still stunned.  The first thing I see is THIS IS NOT AN ENTRY ABOUT THE ADS.  We don't want to hear that there's nothing you can do about it.  We want to know when this decision was made.  By whom.  The extent of AOLs determination to keep or lose its customers. And what can be done about this mess.  I am a mild mannered pacifist, yet I find myself enraged, ENRAGED at this situation and also at the way it IS NOT BEING HANDLED.  You have a mass exodus going on here and you're going to post something this afternoon?  A hurricane has torn up our entire community and we're screaming our heads off here.

Exploitation sucks. By putting you out against this wind, they're exploiting you as well.

I am looking forward to your entry about the Ad Banners.  I hope it isn't a bunch of diplomatic stuff to try to calm down the masses.  I hope it is solid, useable information.  So many people have left Jland.  My good friends, My family.  I am still here, Joe, but I don't know for how long.  It appears AOL could care less about their customers, and losing some of them.  That is a very poor attitude to have for the people who supply the funds for your paychecks.  I don't know.  I'm very heart broken over this issue.  I'm afraid the the family community that we HAD may be gone forever.  And all because AOL didn't take the time to ASK their paying customers what they think.

If AOL ignores this outcry -- then it will be proof positive  that they don't give a care about us.  That's all the incentive I'll need.

This whole situation SUCKS!

The credit all goes to Kathi for sending me the directions!  Her journal is at

It really did work for her and for me- so hope it works for all of you in J Land who are having problems.  I posted the directions in my journal that Kathi sent me via email - oh and sorry about the heiroglyphics that show up but nonetheless, hope it helps someone else get their journal up and running.  Glad to be of any help in this situation.  I know it's a big mess but hopefully it will all get back on track.  Thanks Joe for passing on our comments and thoughts.  We hope they will take the banners down.  It just doesn't feel quite right in our journals.  Maybe they can put these product endorsements on the journals community home page or something different.  Hope they come up with a better idea.  Hugs,
Lisa

Why should we have to fix what you guys messed up?  My journal still isn't working, but something tells me it might never at this rate.

Anonymous said...

Of course it's not an entry about the ads. That would involve someone from AOL communicating to us how much they are greed-driven pigs. We all know they aren't going to admit that! You've waited too long, dude. Not your fault, I know, but it's pretty much too late. You guys have shown how much you appreciate us already. Unfortunately, you don't appreciate us at all.

How hard would it have been to ask us before implimenting this?

This is the straw that broke the camel's back. AOL sucks and you know it. That's why you can't even be bothered to come onto AOL to do your own entries.

well, isn't that special.

it took a PAYING CUSTOMER to FIX the problem.

her blog entry did it for me.  now I can post entries.

not that I will, mind you.

that is, until the ads come down.

in the meantime - i'll be over here:

Hi Joe.

I asked John about this, and I'm asking you as well.

It seems that the email alerts we are receiving (of new entries and comments) are much shorter than they used to be.  Requiring us to click-thru to the journal in order to read the entire new entry or comment.

(In other words, rendering the "email alerts" largely useless as a way to read new entries and comments.)

Is this an accidental glitch with the new system or an intentional change (geared, I reckon, toward forcing us to click the links and therefore be exposed to the new banner ads)?

As I frequently have access to my AOL Mail but not a full web browser (i.e., using a mobile device), I relied heavily on those email alerts to actually read new entries.

Joe, I just followed the first few steps and cleared my Cache and that was all it took.  I can put new entries in no problem AND use the spell check.

Unfortunately that journal is private and inaccessible to most.

Awww, Joe, I am sorry about the way some of our fellow journalers are handling this.  They aren't using very nice words.  I just read two more comments and they are kind of rough.  Hang in there Joe, things will cool down.

Ok there is still a problem when you go to the journal archives it isn't working right...it will say you only have one entry for a month next to the month when you might have a 100.....

Anonymous said...

Thank you Joe. I have been waiting to hear something about the hateful banner ads for twenty-four hours now.

Anonymous said...

I have gotten no feedback from JournalChanges.  I have, however, gotten feedback from an old colleague.  I'm touched, but not encouraged.

want to comment on why it took a PAYING CUSTOMER here to figure out and FIX the posting problems joe?

i'm curious.

and still pissed.

all I did was clear my cashe. It worked for me.

Here's another issue Joe.  I mentioned it in a comment to BTW, but it's more your area.  I realize this is a tiny blip in the overall badness of the week, but it is no longer possible to post the word Mavarin with the accent circumflex over the first a) anywhere in Musings from Mavarin.  Preexisting uses of the word are still find, but when I updated my links list it ruined all my blog titles.  And last night's journal entry did the same.  It didn't matter whether I entered it from Netscape or IE, as text or HTML.  Same annoying result: capital A with tilde followed by a cent sign. :(

This is a low priority, I know, but if I ever post on AOL again (probably a 50/50 chance at this point) I'll need this addressed.

Thanks, and hang in there.

A customer has to offer a fix?

Hey Joe,
Are you still alive over there?  Was just concerned from reading the incoming wounded!  Look, let's get the families together when this is over.  Steak, with the mushrooms and onions, some nice loaded baked potatos with sour cream and chives, a salad to die for with some of that hot bacon sweet n sour dressing and wine, and more wine, and let's not forget the wine.  It's all going to be paid for by AOL.  They will fly in and take our families and us anywhere we want to go and give out money too.  Well I can dream can't I?  Hang in there.  Hope you have a nice hot tub or whirl tub bath to go home to.  Forward all of these comments to the MRS so she knows what your are dealing with before you walk out the door tonight.  It's just now 5pm so you have time to get this and take the advice.  Hugs,
Lisa

Later this afternoon in what time zone?  It's going for evening now.
Blogspot's got me until AOL rescinds its decision to place banner ads on the Journals of paying AOL Member Accounts.

-taps foot impatiently- Okay, Joe.  I'm still waiting on the ad entry.  And it's funny, but you stated you'd write an entry, and yet, there is none yet.  Not trying to be rude, just saying that it's funny to me, how you were supposed to remind us of the upgrade (with the banners) and you *forgot* and now you're telling us you're going to be writing an entry about the banners.  Good thing it's only 3:42 p.m. in California.  You've got a couple more hours to write something.  Otherwise any credibility you had left with me, will be gone.

Hey Joe,
Its coming into the LATER part of the evening here and I'm wondering when you're gonna post that entry that will say our boss's understand and the banners will be gone effectively at midnight CST tonight. That way I can stay up with the rest of Jland to see them go and we can have a huge welcome home party for everyone who left. We can celebrate the end of the war that was started on black tuesday. C'mon Joe, post it. We all want the news up and neither you nor John are online or are posting anything like you promised. Tell us, they're gone at midnight. C'mon, tell us. and Make sure it happens at midnight cst. Cmon, dont tell us they're here to stay. Its like chosing money over friends. Which is worth more? Which?

Oh, Joe ... I know you are taking a beating from AOL's Journal writing public but I cannot tell you how profoundly disappointed I am in AOL for doing this to us.  I have had my master AOL account since 1997 and am furious that ads have been added to my journals.  Inexcusable!!!!!!!  Hopefully you can get the suits to change things immediately.  The primary reason I was sticking with AOL was because of my journals and the feeling of community it evoked. I feel betrayed and used.  I am ready to take my ball and go to another playground!!

The whole rebuild thing worked.  hmmm Not cool that someone outside of AOL fixed that.  Y'all are slacking big time.  All this for ad banners and spell check.  So is it worth it yet?

Hey Joe, any idea why html characters and symbols don't work at all? It's not working for me. I'm having to use firefox to save my entries and I write my entries in html and quotation marks and bullets are messing up the page. It looks fine right before I save it, then afterwards it's messed up with an 'A' thingy where the symbol should be. It's beginning to frustrate me, and I'm a patient person. :). Let me know what I can do ... email me at Treesoup1@aol.com ...

My blog that's having the problems ... http://journals.aol.com/treesoup1/TheWildCatBlog

thanks man, I appreciate

Nothing works as far as anything to do with any and all of these journals of mine..i cannot add entrys or save them so this is a useless place to be of..seems kind of stupid that we as journalers must try and fix all things that you of the higher uppers so enlisted inside of these propertys of ours to make them all as useless to us unless we go all around in circles just over trying to correct these problems that you as the very people that you all are put there to begin with..and only why and if only..but then who inside of that place of yours even cares..for now we are locked out of this place of ours called journal land.

Joe, we just wanted to thank you again for your invaluable help yesterday. You were forced to endure a lot of misdirected criticism (a position that Mal has personally been in) and it had to have been at least a tad uncomfortable. There are those of us who understand that you personally were not responsible for this ill-advised mess, and we want you to know that. We would just like you to pass along to the corporate honchos that J-land is not happy about this state of affairs. It is disrespectful and an affront to those of us who are subscribers.Thanx.

Those of you who have Symantec's product installed on your PC do not see the ads, we have discovered, so if you don't like having to endure viewing them, you might consider their firewall and anti-virus programs.

Bi48clover,
I don't want anyone that visits my journal to see advertising either, especially for companies I disagree with.  Your suggestion doesn't address the route issue.

As of right now, I am in the third day of having to use MIE to get to the AOL.com page and then post to my journal.  The 'cancel' icon works just fine.  The 'save' icon still is out of order.  argh.
