Hi folks -- quick update on the patch (with the ad disclaimer and the path fix, which I talked about in my previous entry)
-- everything tested well in the development and beta environments, but
when the tech folks installed it live to production this morning, they
were seeing "XXX MISSING STRING XXX."
As you can see from last night's entry, that wasn't one of the anticipated features -- the tech folks tried to resolve it in situ, but it didn't work and they had to back it out.
I will post more info when I get it (and when I get into the office).
Thanks -- Joe

LOL Joe, is ANYTHING going right for you these days? Not laughing AT, laughing WITH.

Oh well, they'll figure it out. B/c they are techie folks!
They always figure it out. Anyway, I'm appreciative of the disclaimer we can expect. I just hope people don't have to scroll down to far to "get to" our journal when it's fixed, after they add the vertical space. Tell them thanks for what they do and maybe someone will bake a cake. I'm being funny (not ugly). I guess those AOL commercials stuck. Have a good day.

You should be comedian, because man you make me laugh.
Let me get this straight... Instead of doing one major install and getting all the glitches away at once, you're going to be doing smaller installs over a longer course of time, right? So we can expect our journals to not be working every three months or so?
Ari
well I took your advice and got rid of the caches like you said but no cigar.... still can't add an entry to my journal.... can't figure out how others are doing that.... was waiting for everything to be fixed on Wednesday...... WHY ME?
From the Washington Post:

Please explain to all of us how AOL could say they have received "several dozen complaints about the advertisements " . . . . does that mean that you and John are not actually feeding our complaints up the line, as you said you were?????????? I have seen far more than "several dozen" people complaining about the ads. Far more than "several dozen"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How does AOL think that saying only "several dozen" is an ethically correct answer to the Post's questions.

Another "successful" trial run.
AOL is beginning to make other servers look more tempting. I don't get your whole mindset anymore-and I'm sure it costs us-your subscribers-big bucks everytime your guys screw up, so you'll find more ways to advertise on our journals. Margo

I checked...... they forgot to back the ads out with the rest of the refuse. judi
OH well Happy thanksgiving
Why am I not surprised.
Don't you hate when that happens?
Thanks for explaining the Journals development process a few entries ago. I understand a little better about how those things work for ya'll. Sorry this "patch" did not take. I was looking forward to seeing how the disclaimer looked on my Journal.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving.
Just love the euphemism, "Backed out." Sounds a lot like what AOL did with our journals by putting up the banner ads--backed out of their commitment to customer's right to self-expression: YOUR THOUGHTS, YOUR BLOG. I think you should rename this journal. Call it SMOKE AND MIRRORS.
I just got in and saved an entry. I don't know if it was something you did on your end or if it was because i downloaded the 9.0 security edition but wanted you to know I got in anyway and I like the new spell check. I didn't notice that before. hope it works as I didn't try it yet... have a nice day, Sandra
Although I know no one there is listening, I`m still not able to have entrance into my Journals without using IE. Of course, this problem pales into significance compared to keeping banner ads on our Journals.

Hey, I have an idea... a compromise even!
Since AOL can't get its collective act on the same sheet of music, why not undo this whole "upgrade" - to include the scat y'all dropped on top of our pages.
When AOL gets its act together, you can put those ads back up on our journals. How's that for a win-win?!
Yeah, I know... we have an unfair advantage. At the current rate, our Journals would stay ad-free for another - LIFETIME... just the way AOL imp-LIED they would be when they sold that bill of goods and set Scalzi up for failure.
(Geez, who wants to work for an employer like that?!)

You know, for a zero-tolerance company that deletes people's journals over non-existent TOS violations that they don't even have the inclination to investigate prior to hitting the irrevocable [TANK THIS JOURNAL] button, AOL certainly doesn't deliver zero defects!
It leaves me wondering... Is AOL a for-profit company, or one of those MTV shows where they try people's patience until the bitter end and then start passing out wads of cash to the survivors?
Armand
thanks Joe

How stupid. Big huge AOL can't do anything right?
Humph. Armand stole my theoretical thunder.
The old Journaling software worked.
This version doesn't.
This tells us all that the putative advertising revenue is more important to AOL than the proper functioning of the journals.
The advertising revenue is more important than the happiness of its customers.
The advertising revenue is more important than the happiness of its employees.
Good luck, Joe.
