Serious Blogging. Seriously.

Hey folks -- you know, one of the reasons we built out the new Social Media Blog was that we needed a place for AOL & AIM employees to talk about more serious, slightly drier online community and social media industry topics, like CEO sock-puppetry, how MySpace users are different from Facebook users, online friending in the workplace, what the new Nielsen/NetRatings mean for community, etc.

One of the problems with trying to do that here was that:

1. The people who read Magic Smoke tend not to care about these things.
2. The people who care about these things tend not to read Magic Smoke.

So, instead of trying to make this blog something that it's not, we just made another one.

Sounds great, right? So what's one of my first entries in this, our real first go-live week? A lolcat entry:

Editor Joe says: I are serious blogger. This is serious blog.
Editor Joe says: I are serious blogger. This is serious blog.

Go figure.

Thanks -- Joe

People who read Magic Smoke tend not to care about the topics you listed?  Wow.  I guess I am strange then.  I think the Social Media Blog will prove to be very interesting.
Just one question, I may be a dummy, how do I add this blog to my alerts?

Hey Joe,
Someting totally unrelated here -- any idea what the problem is with AOL pictures on journals? I can't add from AOL pictures using the photo button on my entries. I can still add an album but not the single photos. It's been unavailable for about a week and I've heard other journalers mention it too. Help!
"I are serious blogger" cracked me up! Martha :-)

Krissy: Note the "tend" -- very important modifier. It covers many sins of generalization.

Regarding alerts -- there's a link near the end of my last entry -- basically runs the Social Media Blog rss feed through AOL Alerts -- I've tested it and it works, though the layout and behavior is a little different than the Journals Alert:

http://alerts.aol.com/ar/dlink/dlink.rr?dl_type=rss&dl_data=http://socialmedia.aim.com/rss.xml

(Bonus -- you can do this with any RSS feed. Need to figure out a way to get it integrated with the other feed stuff in the new blog.)

Lifes2Odd: I will have to ask the team to look into picture picker behavior. In the meantime, standard answer applies -- at the first sign of weirdness, try clearing your browser cache and cookies.

Thanks -- Joe

Joe,
I have heard of at least 3 people who have difficulty claiming their blog on Technorati, I'm one of them. It requires active intervention from Technorati to get things working. Has anything changed on AOL Journals that interferes with the Technorati claims process?

I love it!!  Do you mean you did that over there too?  LOL

Hey Joe,
Are there problems with the screen name authentication systems right now (Thursday, July 19, 2007 - 5:53pm)? I'm finding that I have to sign in again to view private journals, and the message boards are showing all messages instead of unread ones.

Never mind, that was a silly question.  You are over at your other blog, LOL.  And I guess you perhaps could have other things to do with your life than write for Magic Smoke.

Hello Joe, been awhile since I stopped by Jland. Miss everyone greatly. I had some Internet time and wanted to see how everyone is doing. I would definitely consider you a serious blogger. Meaning, "what matters" gets talked about....Hope your doing well.....~Raven
