Negative Commenters: What Makes Them Go?

Check out today's Pearls Before Swine comic -- it's about negative commenters on blogs, and it asks -- if they hate a blog or blogger so much, why do they keep coming back to it?

Pearls Before Swine comic on persistent negative comments

If you're a fan of the strip, you'll have a pretty good idea who the commenter is.

Now, for blogger Goat, even having a persistent negative commenter is kind of an improvement -- about this time last year, Goat wasn't getting any comments at all (the strip isn't available online anymore).

Anyway, I sent the link over to Nancie at the Marvelous Mob as something she might want to write about, since this is right up her alley.

Thanks -- Joe

Joe,
Thank you for posting the comic.  I have a couple of thoughts.  When I read Dale Carnagie's book, How to Win Friends and Influence People, the first chapter tells us to never critize, condemn or complain.  No one wants to listen to the 3 C's.  I have always tried to keep that in mind in my everyday communication and with my blog.  I find it very hard to spend any amount of time reading a journal that is negative.  On the other hand, isn't the journal what we want it to be?  Some people just need a place to put their negative thoughts; a coping method.  Others just need someplace to talk about their day.  I will admit that some people thrive on reading about others troubles.  It's easy to see that the sick, troubled and otherwise in need of help seem to get the most comments.  I guess it's our way of trying to pass on a good word when we can do nothing else.
Best regards,
David

And I quote, "If you have nothing nice to say, sit right next to me!"

Joe, this is completely unrelated, but I was wondering about something.  Can a nonAOL member make a comment in my journal?  Just wondering how they would go about doing it.  If you could comment on this, it would be much appreciated.

I've got another question for you, Joe.  Perhaps I should be asking you over at the other journal.  If so, just let me know.  Here's the question:  Sometimes when a buddy comes on line on my computer (not sure which buddy it is, or I would remove him) I hear the noise of a door slamming about 10 times.  It is one of the most obnoxious things I have ever heard.  It makes me jump and grates on my nerves.  I am wondering if there is something wrong with my computer, or could this ACTUALLY be a buddy sound???  If it is a buddy sound could AOL please remove it from their choice of sounds?  Thank you.

Hey Joe, what's up with Journals?  Why are we having to log into them (if we're already logged into AOL -- I'm a AOL subscriber) in order to create new entries??  Right now, in order to make new Journal entries, I have to to click onto the "Blog About This Entry" option on my Journal to get the "log in" page to appear.  Why all the extra security for our Journals, and "My Calendar"?
Is it just a 9.0/Vista thing, or is everyone experiencing this?
Thanks,
~Dee

Krissy -- people without AOL or AIM screennames can use their e-mail address as a screen name (they just have to register it first; it's on the SNS sign in screen, although it's not that clear) -- I will do an entry about it. Actually, I think I will do it in Joseph's Community Info Blog and double publish it or cross link it from here.

Re: your Buddy List sounds problem. Not sure what's going on with your computer, but I notice that sometimes when my machine is having sound problems, it won't play sounds, then all of sudden it will play all the caught up sounds in a bunch.  You can turn off your Buddy Sounds at Keyword: Expression Settings; you can also change your Buddy Sounds at Keyword: Expressions.

Thanks -- Joe (posted & mailed)

Dee -- it's definitely not a feature; sounds like a problem with SNS authentication. Try clearing your footprint (cookies and cache): http://socialmedia.aim.com/2007/07/20/fixes-for-common-aol-issues/

Then restart your AOL and let me know if that helps or not.

Joe, that would be fantastic if you did an entry explaining how those w/o AOL or AIM screenames could post in AOL journals!  That would be a great service.  I hope you post it in Magic Smoke along with your other blog.  Thanks for all your great help, and your promptness in answering me!  Looking forward to the entry,

Krissy :)

Yes, I guess if the number of comments you have is seen as an aimprovement, then negative or other, it does not matter. If the comments are seen as a reward, their nature won't change anything apart from the the content of the entries. If a kid is punished when he behaves well by being ignored but get some reactions even negative when he behaves naughty, then he becomes this bad guy.

But, I know some journals who are hardly read but have quality in the writing and thoughts. All depends what you value. Many blogs have hundred of comments, and often they are blogs from people who are sick or moan all the time. Being kind, or nice, does not always pay as much, again if we only value the number of comments in return.

I never had as many comments on my blog than the day I said I felt depressed. When I write I am happy, almost none... funny no? ah ah ah
