* Last Night's Journals Maintenance: As mentioned yesterday, the Journals team did some cleanup work last night starting at midnight Eastern time.
It went pretty smoothly, finishing early morning today. They re-indexed the Journals database, so we should see some performance improvements.
* Stephanie's Farewell Address: Journals Product Manager Stephanie changes to "AOL Alumni" status today; please see her farewell entry, where she says some very nice things about the AOL Journals community. I know I will miss her.
* Listening to the Web on the Radio: Also, there were a couple of bloggy stories on this morning's Morning Edition, including:
- The Blogger Code of Conduct That Won't Die: Interviews with Kathy Sierra and Tim O'Reilly about the proposed blogger code of conduct I mentioned last week.
My feeling: It was a dumb idea then, and it's a dumb idea now. - The Virginia Tech Collegiate Times: They also profile the Hokie campus newspaper, the Collegiate Times, and how they're serving the community and the international media with the coverage on their Web site.
Right now, they're using a very bloggy front page format to do continuous updates, in addition to linking to other resources and stories. Thanks -- Joe

Hello. I read your letter to Jimmy BeBad...about how you decided to censor him. This is your choice, but in essence, you realize, that you are IN FACT, censoring him... because he PUSHED the boundaries. Not crossed them. You can sweet talk it all you want, but you are really censoring him. (PLease let me state that His 'journals' were of no interest to me and that I pretty much disagreed with everything he said...I just thought he had a right to say it.)
What I am really writing about today is how I feel that myself and a few others a un-represented in your journal world. I see you feature journals about race, about homosexual issues, about celebrities, about yourself, pretty much about everything but the one topic that means the most to me...and that is God.
I have been tagged already in this journal world as a 'jesus freak' and have even had comments left on my journal saying it straight out. People delete me and edit me and reject me, all because I talk of our Lord and His ways. I have not once complained to staff for these derogetory comments or left them comments in return. I have accepted their rejection of me as a compliment, that I am doing something right.
Why is it that there are no editor picks representing God? Representing what half of America claims to believe in? Why is it that someone finally figures out how to get the "most commented" journals page back to reality, and you take THAT form of speech away. You know what all the comments on the most comments journal page are? The SAME 25 people reading each others journals and telling each other how cool they are. How is THAT different from what you say BeBad is doing??????
Please listen to your conscience. Do the right thing. I won't tell you what it is, because I am sure you know. Make the RIGHT choices in your job sir. Do the RIGHT things in your life.
Manda -- thanks for writing. I will address your concerns in a separate entry -- it's not about what folks are doing, it's about how it's being done. There are a whole bunch of separate issues that come into play, and I'm going to need some time to bring them together in an entry.

WHat you say is mostly true Joe...but this is JOURNAL world, not blog world. And I know you belive that they are the same thing, but people certainly don't always use them for the same reasons. And frankly, it IS about WHAT people are doing AND how they are doing it. But, I understand that you need to defend your actions. And please, by all means, take that opportunity. I appreciate your quick responce and your willingness to look into things. If I could chose, I would request that you address the issue of no "God" in your editor picks first. That is the one issue the distresses me the most. Thank you.

Dawn: NO! I'm not a product manager. They can't make me a product manager. Product managers have to do work. Hard work, like Product Requirements Documents and go to bug scrubs and deal with annoying programming types (like me).

Manda: I'm not sure I understand the distinction you're making between blogs and journals. AOL Journals is a blogging platform, and you can do whatever you want with a blog -- use it as personal diary, or a shared photo album, or a essay platform, or whatever.
Also, which editor's picks are you referring to? I haven't done Guest Editor's picks in a while.
