Twofer Tuesday: Missing Entries And Missing Editor

Hi folks -- sorry for the delay in posting this. As many of you have reported, entries that were posted yesterday (Monday, 10/15), have vanished. I asked the Journals database folks about it, and here's what happened:

* There were problems with the database host last night.
* The database was "failed over" to the replicate database
* However, apparently the replicate database has had trouble replicating for a few days, so some posts didn't make it back to production
* They "failed over" back to the original database host, and the DB ops are trying to find a way to restore the missing entries.

I will ask that the team keep everybody updated on status.

However (and this is part two of the twofer Tuesday), I won't be able to give you those updates,  since I'm no longer going to be Journals Editor. As you may have heard, AOL laid off a bunch of people today, and I'm one of them. So after about two-and-a-half years and just under 1,000 entries in this blog, I will be leaving you.

Not to fret, though -- I'll be fine, and I've asked that someone (or some group of folks, most likely) pick up the mantle of Journals Editor and continue supporting and publicly communicating about the AOL Journals product. Until they sort that out, though, posting to Magic Smoke and responses to JournalsEditor@aol.com may fall off.

It's been great working with you over the years -- sorry I couldn't get a lot of what you folks were asking for.

Best of luck to everyone.

Thanks -- Joe

Oh, I am so sorry.  I will miss you.  I hope we get another journals editor.  However, I can't imagine anybody doing as good a job as you or replacing you.  How very sad.  Goodbye, and thanks for a job well done, Joe.  Good luck finding another job.

Sorry Joe, I'll miss your updates.  Hope you've a good job lined up for the future.  AOL must not like us jlanders much.  We just get deleted and left in the dark it seems.  Hope they can get the bugs out.  I put a lot into my journal and had hoped it would be on line for a long long time.  Too bad I guess I'd better start making some real paper back ups if I want to keep my journal.  'On Ya' - ma

Joe -
AOL is foolish and stupid for letting someone like you walk out the door. How they could take one of their public faces (and the one that knows the most about reaching out to their clientele) and show them the door is mind-boggling.

Corporate rage aside, your work is spectacular and your dedication to the community astounding. I hope you find peace and prosperity in your next job, and I hope that your next employer doesn't take for granted what you've so long provided AOL - a dedicated, hard working, community-loving employee...and a good person.

Best wishes,
Charley

So sad to see you leave, Joe. You are a wonderful and in touch person. You always looked out for the journalers and kept everyone in the loop. I guess AOL will kick the journalers to the curb.

I can only wish you the best and I know you will find something wonderful and worthy of the talents you possess

Best of life for you!

Joe -- you have been GREAT.  I do NOT understand why aol is laying off yet again, and why lay off the face of aol, so to speak, to so many?  I have known other aol employees in the past, previously laid off.  At some point in time when you personally are back up and running (blog, whatever), give some of us a holler, kay?  This sucks, and I'll miss you, though I suppose it sucks a whole lot more for you.  May you find a brand new opportunity out of this.  -- Robin

Say it ain't so, Joe!  (Just had to get that quote in.)

Grrr.  Arrgh.  If there was one person I was NOT expecting to see laid off from AOL today, it was you.  It shows AOL to be entirely clueless about community / customer relations - again. You and John were the only rallying points left for the dying community that was J-Land. Now there's just John.  It's hard to understand how AOL can consider your talent, dedication, good humor and goodwill generation to be dispensible.  It isn't.  Nobody is going to look at those darn ads if the journals they're on go by the wayside, victims of dwindling readership, lack of support and a sense of abandonment. But you, Joe, are going to land on your feet, I'm sure.  There must be a hundred people, at least, who would gladly write you a letter of recommendation right now after all you've done for us.  Farewell!

OH NO!!!!  You were the only person we could ever get any info out of!!!  Now AOL will play games with us and we will have no one on the "inside!"

Damn you AOL.....you've got enough problems....DON'T LET JOE GO!!!

Awwwwww No! Leave it to AOL to lay off valuable people like you Joe. I've been on AOL for over 10 years, they never cease to amaze me with some of their hair-brained ideas.
You'll be sorely missed, but I wish you all the best in whatever new endeavors you might choose.
How will we know who to turn to if/when we have Journal problems? Will AOL let us know? (yeah right)
All the best.

Good Luck, Joe! You will be missed.... AOL is... well, my Mom says if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all, so I won't... but I still think they are making a mistake letting someone like you go. You have been an asset to the community!

If you start a private blog you should let John Scalzi know so he can point us all your direction from the By the Way... look at that.. Instant readers!

Ummm, Joe?  Are you going to blog anywhere?  If so, it would be nice to know; I'd like to keep up with your doings.

Joe, please keep in touch with us.  You've been, by far, the best Journals Editor since the journals inception.  You've always been helpful to us and if something went wrong, you always looked into it and provided answers.  AOL is losing a great employee and continues to go downhill. :(

Best of wishes to you and hopefully, this layoff will only be temporary.

Hi !!!!!!

Its terrible to think that you were laid off. I think everybody needs a job so I'm sure that things will work out for you. Sometimes I didn't agree with you on certain subjects but you were always trying to say your point. I am sure many will miss you and will be thinking of you. Take care.

Joe, I have come to appreciate you a lot, and while I didn't comment often, I did come by for visits. I wish you a lot of luck, and happiness with whatever the future brings you. Take good care.

Joe,
This is absolutely outrageous on AOL's decision maker (s). You are a VITAL to AOL and the people who "choose" to blog here. We don't go to Blogger, TypePad and the countless other places: we come here to AOL. So many have come to rely on you and your expertise, not to mention your a really nice guy and so FUNNY! I would think that AOL would do anything to keep you. This is "thier" loss as far as I'm concerend.
You will do so well wherever you decide to go. I hope that there is someway you can let us all know where that is? I for one would like that very much.
Good Luck to you and I will miss you SO MUCH!!!

I saw that news story today, and thought of you, and wondered. Question answered.
SO glad I had the chance to meet you in person.  You are as genuinely nice in person as you are online. YOU really made this whole Journals Editor thing work, and it was always so great to read your posts and interact online with you.

I think AOL made a big mistake in letting you go.

Wishing you the best of luck in the future, hope I can 'run into' you somewhere online, I know you'll go on to bigger and better things from here.

Take care, Joe, and THANK YOU, for everything you've done for the Journals community.

*gasp*  jooooooooooooooooooooooooooo (wailing), sniff sniff.  well, i hope you get to do just what you'd like to be doing for way more money and better benefits.  cuz getting cut sucks.  of interesting note, yes, i did lose my stuff and yes it came back.  and then i lost 7 or entries that were made last night (mon) and into the early morning hours of tue.  they were there early this AM (tuesday) and then poof! gone, i've gotten alerts of the comments people left for those entries and yet, no access to those very entries.  i don't expect you to address the problem, seeing that's not your job.  i'm just sayin, debra

Joe, safety and strength each day the rest of your life on this planet.
Back in 1972 I and eleven others went through the same experience
at a university we were employed by because certain courses we
taught were discontinued.  After some floundering I settled into the
hospitality business as a motel/hotel night auditor.  I am now retired,
but am heavily online.
