Update on Private Journals and Comments

As Joe mentioned earlier today, in order for Blogger to be able to migrate a private journal, you would first need to make it public. There was an issue in this process that would result in the comments being deleted once you made the journal public. We subsequently requested you hold off until we sorted this out. We have.

I'm pleased to report that those of you who maintain private Journals and have been holding off migrating them while we corrected this, you may now proceed to make them to public and start your migration. We made the necessary adjustments which will allow your comments to follow your posts over to Blogger.

great news.. now if you can just figure out why so many of us are bombing out.. stalling.. and have no entries ..... it will be even better news

I appreciate the work that you're putting into this. I am still not satisfied, though, that the comments from a private journal-made-public will retain the comments.

The following is copied exactly from under the 'edit journal' section on one of my private journals, when I clicked on 'make journal public'.

"Making your Journal public means anyone can now read it.

All comments added while the Journal was private will be deleted."

I'm afraid to do anything. The concern has not been losing the comments during the transfer to blogger. The concern is losing the comments in aol when making the journal public. I've seen that asked before in comments here, and haven't seen the answer. So unless I missed it...help please!??  Thanks so much!!

You are correct. By design, all Journal comments posted immediately after you took your Journal private would be deleted once the private Journal was returned to a public state. Those posted prior to going private would not have been affected.

Now in order to allow you to move your Journal with it's private and public comments intact over to Blogger, we applied a change to all private Journals that changes how the system reacts when you go back to public.  There's a time stamp feature in the database which controls how far back the comments are deleted. We changed it to make the Journal react as though it was just made private today, and was public before that, so you can then safely make that Journal public without anything being deleted.

Sorry for the jump into tech talk, but I wanted to illustrate that we took this seriously,  tested this through out the afternoon and are comfortable that your comments will follow you.

I should clarify. It should go without saying that your private blogs are still private until you make it public for the migration.

I know someone will ask. ;-)

I surely do appreciate all the time and energy people are spending in making this happen.  My four-plus years of drivel on AOL Journals wasn't worth a lot to anyone else, but there were things chronicled there that were of HUGE importance to me.  I'm so glad I could save those memories.

Regarding my question of yesterday.  My aol blog imported as a totally different blog and was not add to my new blog on blogger although it worked for countless others.  I was told to go to http://draft.blogger.com and there I would find settings and a section called Blog tools.  In blog tools there would be Import and Export links and I could use those to combine my old blog with my new one so it appears as one complete blog with all my four years + entries into.  Well, I went into that url, draft blogger.com and all it did was take me to my own dashbard.  Blog tools does not appear on there.  I am getting desperate and so very tired.  I have health issues and am spending far too much time on here trying to get this sorted out.  Is there anything you can do to help me please?

I'm going to say thank you ahead of time for making the adjustments so that I don't lose the comments on my private journal.   Some of the comments are more priceless than the entries themselves!

Do let us know how it went for you.

Just checking in... Vish said Blogger would attempt to migrate my journal again today after failing yesterday.  I do seriously think based on those of us that are having the bombout/stall issue it has to do with the size and number of graphics.  Any success?  Do I just forget the whole idea of having an archive over there?
thanks

Nitemaremom,
I'm checking with blogger now.

I have a private journal with no graphics, pictures, etc.  I made it public and still could not migrate it.  I am not even trying to do the journals with graphics yet!  I have read all the variations on what to do to make it work and I have done all of those.  Any suggestions now?

Frank... Vish... any news on migration of my journal or a fix?   Any update would be appreciated.  thanks
d

Okay....this says we can migrate without losing our comments, but when I go to make my journal public, it still gives me the warning that all comments will be deleted if I go public.

Yet when I try and migrate it while still be private, it can't find my journal.

So how are we supposed to save our comments?  Any specifics?

I've already lost the comments on two of my journals...really don't want to lose these too.

bridgetteleigh75, it will throw up that dialog that says "comments will be lost" but do not fear :) (we can restore your journal if that happens)..go ahead..and can you send me the names of the private journals where you lost comments during the conversion, I will try to restore them for you.

Vish

Donna, still no word on your journal. I am hopeful we can get this to work

buggieboo1, your private journals have been restored with all the comments. Please try the migration again.

Thanks Vish...  not sure what they are doing if anything.. should I continue to try (tho I feel it's wasting time)  I'd hate to be messing with it if they are doing  it too.  That could have already happened as I continued trying before only to learn after the fact that they were trying.  Damn I could have deleted what they were doing thinking it was mine.  ::sigh::

Donna, Just hold off on trying to migrate. When they can get it to work, I will let you know.

I was so excited to read this post:  then I actually tried the migration.

I tried it several times (in my AOL browser), SEVERAL, and it failed.  Even refreshing didn't help.

So I decided to try it through my Foxfire browser and it took off like a hawk.  Everything seemed to go smoothly.  It imported and then I had it published.  But when I went open it up to check it, it was COMPLETELY blank.  Only my title and picture was visible.  ( I tried this 3 more times.)

I have since set my aol journal back to private for the time being and deleted the imported journal at Blogger.  It's URL is as follows:

http://journals.aol.com/scotthlori/DiscoveringMe/

I would greatly appreciate your help!

thanks Vish.. hopefully it will be resolved for me and so many others prior to them being deleted off AOL.   I will keep checking back, but an email would be good too :)  thanks

Hey, Bridgett here.

Here's the links to the two journals where I lost my comments.

http://journals.aol.com/bridgetteleigh75/recovering-parker/
http://journals.aol.com/bridgetteleigh75/SerendipityLost/

I would be forever grateful if you were able to restore them!

Thanks so much!

I'm transferring my BIG journal...and as it was migrating, it's completely stopped on one entry and hasn't moved for quite awhile.  Should I stop it or keep waiting it out?

Bridgett

Okay...latest update.  It's migrating all the way to the comments on my very first entry (which is the end of the migration) and then it just stops and does nothing.

Not sure what's causing this, as there are NO comments on my very first entry...

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Bridgett

Bridgett, You have 667 entries. Did all of them come over? Jeanne from Jeannette's Jottings had 865 entries come over (I think she lost one, but that could easily have been an album). So, it's been done before.

Hey Vish ~

I don't know what's going through.  It gets to the final entry of the migration process and just freezes.  It doesn't give me the option of publishing or viewing or anything.  It just sits there.

I've tried three times and it's done the same thing every time.  It freezes on the 'reading comments of' the final entry.

BTW, were you able to restore the comments to my other two journals?

-Bridgett-

Anonymous said...

Okay, it actually finished reading all my posts this time....BUT...when I went to publish it, it gave me this code:

bX-zcvzjv

No idea what this means and the blogger help center didn't help at all.

Bridgett, We can look at your problem on Monday. Same for restoring the Private journal. We just did a restore for bugieboo1 a few hours ago. Wish I had seen your comment at that time, we could have done yours too.

I lost all comments from my private journals because I jumped the gun to migrate not knowing you guys were working on a solution. If possible I'd love to have my comments restored on http://journals.aol.com/lifes2odd/LifesLittleChallenges/.

Another private journal I'm trying to migrate - http://journals.aol.com/lifes2odd/Justvisiting/ - it's saying it can't find the journal. Do we still have to make private journals public before trying to migrate?

Thanks, Martha

I am having the same problem that 'bridgetteleigh75' is having ... the migration process freezing during reading the second to the last entry of my journal. I have tried refreshing numerous times and it just doesn't work.

I know you guys are hard at work here but I am getting very nervous as Nov 1st is quickly approaching.

Again, my journal address is http://journals.aol.com/scotthlori/DiscoveringMe

Thanks.

Vish ~

As far as I can tell, all 667 entires of my 'Four' journal went through.  I'm going entry by entry to make sure all pictures, graphics, and comments are there, but obviously, that takes awhile.

I have no idea why it finally decided to work for me, but it did.

But I'd still love the comments to my other two journals restored.  I believe you have the links.

Thanks,
Bridgett

Ok, so after trying after 10 times to migrate my journal it finally went through ... I decided to go through it to make sure things look ok.  Back in my 2005 entries, there are some entries that look like there are written on top of each other.  There are also pictures that have text written over them.  Back then I used to write on backgrounds ... those entries barely show up at all ... only the first few sentences of the entries.

lifes2odd, you need to make your private journal public before attempting the migration
