Weekend Blogplugs - 6/29

Hi folks,

Another glorious weekend in the Bay area.
It's Sunday evening, blogplugs time :). I don't see a whole lot of them
this week. Maybe technorati has screwed up or people are busy enjoying
their summer.
By the way
, I would
like to offer the Magic Smoke platform for
anybody
who wants to host a game or a contest
. Krissy and Val are
doing a great job with their Caption contest and I would like to see
more of such fun stuff.

* Krissy
has created a "Nice Matters" sticker here.
This is in response to Rosemary's Thursday
challenge.

* Penny drops
by to say that she her move
to her new place
was by no means smooth, but it got done. Her
dog Precious gave birth to puppies a few days after she moved
in.

* Tawnya's
Wednesday
Hero
is Staff Sgt. Jude Voss 1st Battalion, 3d Special Forces
Group (Airborne).

* Indigo has
learnt to accept her deafness with serenity. In her words "More and
more I think I find more beauty and serenity in the silence than not".
She has a couple of occasions to celebrate: she turns 43 on July 1st
and is also celebrating her 5th anniversary with Paul (Doc). For the
first occasion she becomes introspective
and is at peace with the person she has become. For the second occasion
she has written
a poem
.

* Jimmy is
happy
to be the winner in the Caption contest and thanks all
who voted for him..he mentions something about bribes..is that
legal?:)

* John
mentions a Writer's workshop that Krissy and he went to,
where the presenter disliked
blogs and
bloggers
.

* Monponsett
has posted several
pics
from the Boston Celtics championship parade.
Editor's Note: As a former New Englander, I root for
all the Boston teams. WTG Celtics! Do I hear repeat
?

* And finally, Guido
mentions that AOL
Journals will celebrate 5 years
in August. He is wondering if
somebody will pick up the baton as he is not yet actively involved in
JLand. Editor's Note: I am looking forward to it. It
has been a fun ride so far. Krissy has suggested a group chat on that
day and I think that is a great
idea.

Contests &
Trivia!

* Weekly
sentence with Val.
This winners
for the letters
FATHER.

Lights,
Camera
and
Action!

*Krissy's
JLand Photo Shoot entries
for the subject
"Two".

*

"What's the Caption? Wednesday" #13 Poll

Hi, it's Krissy.  And once again it's time for the "What's the Caption? Wednesday" poll.  This week we have four captions for you to choose from.

First, let's go over the ground rules.  We want the most popular caption of the poll below to win.  Vote only once.  Consider the caption, not the author of the caption.  And please, nobody campaign for votes.  You are on your honor.

Please remember you have until 9 AM Tuesday to vote.  That's 9 o'clock Tuesday morning, EDT.  On Tuesday morning, after the votes have been recorded, the winner will be announced.

Now it's up to you!  Go vote!

Guest Editor Picks 6/27/08

Howdy!

My J-Land name and Journal is Bucko.  My real
name is
Ken, I am a 45 year old Project Manager, and I work at a Nuclear Power
Plant.  Bucko comes from my true personality by nature, a
clown, some might even say a smart alec :o).  I have really done some clown
work (my character is a hobo clown, occasionally down on my luck,
but eternally optimistic :o).

I
am amazed and honored to
be this week's Guest Editor. A big thank you to Vish and Magic Smoke
for taking a risk on me. In addition, I am confident
I would not have had this opportunity if it was not for
my bride of more than six
years, Beth, over at
Nutwood Junction.  As
you can see from the
picture at the left,
she has a similar sense of humor as I do!.  But enough about
me, on with the show!  The following five journals are ones
that I have set on my alerts, because I truly do enjoy keeping up with
their J-Land
journeys.  I hope you will visit and become regular readers as
well.  You can find a few other
favorites ofmine (Indigo
and Sheria) on the
sidebar of my
Journal.

Joyce, from My
Extremely Simple Life
, is retired and
shares with us
the happenings
and thoughts from
rural Tennessee.  She also creates some mighty fine
"tags".  Stop
by
for a look and a snag :o)  A truly sweet
person.

Dan, of Slapinions, is
from Milwaukee and
has opinions on many things, ranging from fatherhood, sports, movie reviews, and anything
else that strikes his fancy :o)  My impression is an all
around NICE guy!

ChippertuesWorld
is a new
journal
that was recommended to me several months ago, based on an entry
I had made.  13 years ago, she was in a car accident,
and that left her paralyzed from the chest down.  She chose to
make the best of it and be positive; not bitter and mad.  Stop
by to encourage her as she maneuvers her way through life
:o)

Mark, from Stars
Like Grains of Sand In My Pocket
, has
had some tough times
with relationships, but I think you will find out by reading him that
he is a true romantic :o)  Read about his introspections as he
takes his life journey.

The Wildcat's
Lair
, if I can implore J-Landers to visit a journal, it is this one.  Wildcat is a
true "journalist",
and I have nothing more to say except please go and experience the
antics of Frank and Wildcat, and make sure you leave a comment to
encourage him to keep the adventure
alive :o)

Having this opportunity to hi-lite some journals, I made to take the time to
look for some journals that I have not read before, and that may not
have been on our J-Land radar
screens.    I found two journals that I have
started to frequent over the past several weeks, and I hope you will
enjoy them as well.

First is Claudia
Thoughts
.  She writes her
thoughts, and is a
realist.  She also has a flair with the camera, won't you stop
by and take a peak?

Second is Mrs.
Linklater's Guide
to the
Universe
.  Learn some interesting facts
about life in the Windy City, which the Mrs. Linklater clearly
loves.

Thanks
for letting me take
you on this journey this week :o)

Nice Matters Challenge (additional information)

Nancy pointed out something very important to me:

C'mon Rosemary...how about a little incentive?  Yeah...we're nice and all, but a little prize is NICER!    ; )
Hugs,
Nancy

Ahhh ok I have to spell it out. (good point I'm glad you pointed this out to me I'm new at challenges and this is very important!)

The incentive is. this.... (I dream big) There idea will be reproduced in mass all over the nation and with any luck, the world!   Which ever design gets chosen is the one that will go on permanent record for the "nice" matters award. AND there by gets bragging rights forever and acknowledgement of their efforts as I go along.  Additionally, if it is an original piece, of course their signature will be somewhere on the image as well there by getting further recognition.

Read below for more information on the challenge.

Nice Matter Challenge

A while ago the Nice Matters award was going around J-Land.  If you do not know what the nice matters award is click here.  I thought it was such a great concept that I tossed around the idea with a few J-Landers about taking the idea into our everyday lives outside the computer.  I also consulted Corey from Tongue In Cheek who created the award for her permission to use her concept as a starting point.

Recently I received and e-mail from my dear friend Veronica and Krissy from Sometimes I think that shared a story about a teacher who had done something very similar, you can read that story here.

With permission from Corey I began a feasibility study.   I wanted this award to be as easy, cost effective and as uniform as possible.  I wanted everyone to be able to have access to this award regardless of their financial situation so that they would be able to either buy the supplies, or reproduce them on their own.  I looked into the idea of ribbons as in the story above, buttons, bracelets, lapel pins and such, but none of those ideas could be reproduced in a uniform fashion that was reasonably priced.

So I decided that a sticker would be the best solution.  Stickers can be created in mass quantities at a manufacturer, or at home for just pennies if you have a sticker maker

The next challenge I came across, and Corey concurred, was that the award as it stands, was not gender neutral enough.  While there was one for the women and one for the men, and both are very nice, we thought that another logo should be created that would work well for both genders.

This is where J-Land comes in and my Challenge Yourself Challenge.  I would like to challenge you to submit a gender neutral picture that would look nice on a sticker about 1.5 inches in circumference or there about.  Any shape is fine, but remember it has to be easy to cut out.  If it is an original work, please sign it, but you also need to be willing to forgo copy write so that it may be reproduced by all.  This is a labor of love.  It is a gift to those people out there that wish to make a difference in others lives, even if it is something as simple as telling someone that they matter.

Here are the rules and deadline:

Submissions are due by  12:00 noon EST. on July 8.

If you would like to enter your submission, please place a comment below requesting all to visit your journal. Please include a link to your journal as well.

EVERYONE in J-Land will vote on this project.

I will post all entries on my journal INSPIRATION and allow everyone to vote.  The three with the most votes will be posted here at Magic Smoke on July 10th for a final vote by all.

"What's the Caption? Wednesday" #12 Poll

Hi, it's Krissy.  Time for the "What's the Caption? Wednesday" poll.  I hope you all had fun coming up with captions this week.  I bet you did.  Because they were very clever and oh so hilarious!  We laughed so hard as we read them!

Valerie and I thank those of you who submitted captions.  You didn't make it easy for the judges, but the judges narrowed it down to four captions for you to vote on.

Go and vote!

Reflections ~ Magic Smoke Style

"And the day came  when the risk [it
took]  to remain tight in the bud

Was more painful than the risk it took to
blossom."     Anais
Nin

Greetings,
fellow journalists ~ And a warm welcome to all those passing
through

Please
allow me to introduce myself.
My name is Michelle, and I've been sharing my thoughts,
feelings and fateful journey in the pages of my journal, Reflections,
for over three years now.
What began as simple documentary of my daily activities
turned into something I never would have imagined ~ a beautiful,
fulfilling and delightful way of reaching out and searching
within.  Reflections has
been and continues to be so many things to me:  A place to vent.  A quiet retreat.  A connection to the world.  A place where friends always know
they are welcome to visit and share a smile ~ or offer a
shoulder.  It has become a
celebration of the moments I have captured through my camera's
lens.  There are times when
I reflect quietly ~ even silently, as a picture paints a thousand
words, or a poem finds my heart when my own words elude me.

More
importantly, I've been incredibly fortunate to have stumbled upon some
wonderful journals that have brought some very special people into my
life.  Many of them have
been mentioned on these pages before, and I would gladly add them (and
countless others) to my personal list of "must
read's".  What I would like
to do today however, is highlight a few journals that are relatively
new additions to that list. And if you haven't yet already, I'd like to
suggest you pay them a visit sometime as well.  You won't be
disappointed.

VagabondJourneys "Ambling
through a forest of ideas, influences, events, art and people I have
known, trying to define in some positive way a difficult and troubled
life, with honesty, humility and humor. No rituals, no rules, no
summations."
A thoughtful man with clever with
words and inspiring thoughts and ideas, DB has become someone I am
honored to call "friend".

Porchswingpoet  "my journey
through time......"
  Rarely do I find a journal that reaches
deep inside and touches me as instantly as this one.
Your heart needs a little understanding?  Go here.

Rosarium
"
Mindscapes, rants, deep philosophical
reflections...Well, okay, let's just say rants and leave it at
that.  Man, you're
fussy!"
  Honestly, you won't want
to fuss after reading some of these stories.  I have been deeply moved here as
well.  Especially by the
"Thankfulness"
entries.

ChosenWords
"... mostly about
poetry, sometimes art."
This is a brand new one for me, too...  But with each new visit, I am
always left looking forward to the next
one.

Iwasthinking...  ~ "Each new day
is a blank page in the diary of your life. The secret of success is in
turning that diary into the best story you possibly can." ~ Douglas
Pagels
   Memories, thoughts and
personal reflection ~ a journey ~ honestly and thoughtfully shared with
the world.  You'll find
yourself wanting to ride along.

Thank you for
allowing me the opportunity and honor of being this week's Guest
Editor!  Happy reading ~ and
writing!

Peace,

Chelle

Who is "Shannon" ?

Just stopped by to introduce myself. Last week Vish and the crew at Magic Smoke, dropped me an E-mail asking if I'd be interested in adding a weekly feature to Smoke based on my Blog Chili's Sauce on Aol.

Wow, I was pretty taken back by the offer, and humbled also, thanks Jland. So here we go, my name's Paul C. some call me Phil LOL, but to my friends and many JLanders I'm known as "Chili".

I worked in the broadcasting field for over 22 years as a programmer for a communications company, on the West Coast. Formatting (deciding what types of music would go well in a city) radio stations across the US. Rock, Oldies, Pop, Country, Folk etc. etc. and retired from the field last year.

I've been a member of Aol since 1995 (under a different screen name), and changed screen name's in 2006.

I returned to blogging this year after quite a few years off, with the intention to just blog about myself and my life. Slowly though the blog began to take on a form of it's own, and has become, somewhat of a living breathing Internet creature. I guess it's It's like my Grandma use to say " Do what you do best, you'll love it and you'll touch someone somewhere"

So I'm doing what I do best, playing and checking out music (with a little the help from my friends).

Here's A Sample of what you'll find in "Chili's Sauce"

Henry Gross - Shannon

Henry Gross (born April 1, 1951, Brooklyn, New York), is an American singer-songwriter best known for his hit song, "Shannon".

Henry Gross produced a single, "Shannon", a song written about the passing of Beach Boy Carl Wilson's Samoyed (dog) of the same name.(Henry had an Irish Setter also named Shannon) The single went gold and became a worldwide hit, reaching #6.

"Shannon" - Henry Gross w/ Lyrics

Shannon - Lyrics:
Another day is at end
Mama says she's tired again
No one can even begin to tell her
I hardly know what to say
But maybe it's better that way
If Papa were here I'm sure he'd tell her

Shannon is gone
I hope she's drifting out to sea
She always loved to swim away
Maybe she'll find an island
With a shaded tree
Just like the one in our backyard

Mama tries hard to pretend
That things will get better again
Somehow she's keepin' it all inside her
But finally the tears fill our eyes
And I know that somewhere tonight
She knows how much we really miss her

Shannon is gone
I hope she's drifting out to sea
She always loved to swim away
Maybe she'll find an island
With a shaded tree
Just like the one in our back yard ...
Just like the one in our back yard .....

At age 18, Henry was a founding member of the world famous rock 'n' roll revival group Sha Na Na, playing guitar & wearing on-stage the "greaser" clothes he wore in high school. The group's popularity took a giant step after legendary performances at the Fillmore auditoriums in New York and San Francisco and the Woodstock Festival.

Henry Gross broke from the band Sha Na Na to be a solo singer/song writer in 1970. Henry Gross signed a record deal with ABC Dunhill Records in 1971. The album had very little commercial success. He continued to play at clubs and colleges until in 1973 he was signed with A&M Records.

His first A&M album, self-titled Henry Gross, sold very well and had several large regional hits including "Simone", "Come On Say It", "Skin King" and a near gold cover of Lindisfarne's European hit "Meet Me On The Corner". Henry's second A&M album Plug Me Into Something, sold just short of gold. He began to achieve national recognition in Rolling Stone Magazine and The New York Times as a great Rock & Roll guitarist.

After that Henry went to Lifesong Records to make his new album. He produced a single "Shannon". The single went gold and became a worldwide hit. After this single's success, Henry released an album called "Release". His 2nd single, "Springtime Mama", sold just short of gold & reached #37 in the USA. On his next album, "Show Me to the Stage", Henry mixed Rock & Roll songs with Phil Spector and Brian Wilson influences. While the album sold very well, it had no hit singles. He also recorded the Beatles song "Help!" for the documentary All This and World War II; both occurred in 1976. Henry's recording career slowed but he continued recording. With CBS Records he made " Love is the Stuff" and with Capitol Records, in 1981, along with The Bobby Colomby produced the, "What's in a Name" LP.

In the 1980s Henry performed in the road company production of "Pump Boys andDinettes," with a cast featuring Jonathan Edwards, and Nicolette Larson. Henry moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1986 and signed a publishing deal with Pic-A-Lic Music, a company owned by legendary songwriter Roger Cook and the multi talented Ralph Murphy.

Weekend Blogplugs - 6/16

Hi folks,

A busy weekend for me, hence a late edition
of blogplugs. Let's see what we got for
'plugs.

* Beth
is unhappy
with Fox news for their treatment of Obama and his
family.

* Sherry
gives us details of the family trip to the museum. She writes
that with the onset of summer, she is walking
a tight rope
between , kids, hubby , her Dad and life. Maybe
that is why she is handing out "strong
woman
" awards
:)

* Kasee
informs us about an effort send the largest single shipment
of care packages
to U.S. troops in history.

* Sugar is
handing
out
the last of the "Dad" tags. She shares
a depresssing clip of how abandoned animals are treated.

* Connie's
mom has moved in with her and she shares
details
of the
move.

* Jimmy
thinks he needs to go back
to training camp
as he has had difficulty handling 2 late
nights.

* Paul has
been busy playing requests for people from near and far. This week he
chronicles (amongst his many entries) Na
Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye
, Breakfast
at Tiffanys/Henry Mancini/Audrey Hepburn
and the inimitable
Elvis.

* Lisa feels
like writing again and she spills
out
her fears, hopes and frustrations.

* Indigo in a
conversation, trying to pacify
her dog
, Pickles, who is annoyed because he was given a
bath.

* Krissy has installed a
hit counter from sitemeter.com on her blog and it is giving her a lot
of insight
into where her readers are from. She was surprised
that she has  readers in Austria and even
India.

* Marie writes that we should
look
inwards
and remove anything that comes betweeen us and God.
She believes
that when we see something in ourselves we don’t like and
move towards changing it –we are
converted.

* Tawyna's
Wednesday
Hero
is Army Spc. Jeffrey A. Williams.

* Betty believes
that we should show patience in waiting for the Lord just as her dog
Koda's shows patience while waiting for his master to return home.

* Robin is
recovering from surgery at home and gives us a report on some of the
get
well goodies
she has received. Editor's note: Robin, our team
wishes you a very speedy and full
recovery.

* Laini writes
about the times before she and Mark got hitched. Shavuot
is the Jewish holiday celebrating the harvest season in Israel and she
has some pictures
here. Here she gives us the recipe
for their favorite
salad.

Last week's winners for the
