Feature Focus: Bluestring and Photoshow slide shows
Here are two examples. Photoshow and Bluestring.
Photoshow plays with music (which you can select while creating). It's off by default, so click on the Speaker icon to listen.
I'll put some other examples up later this week.

Warning: Tagged
of invites from Tagged.com by people on AOL. It seems that it wasn't
them doing it directly, but the site. They are one of the breed that
abuses your email addressbook for sending out invites. Scam at best,
phishing at worst, apparently. Read this review - wait for a few seconds for the banner ad to clear as you enter the page.
This was first posted on Northern Trip on 3 April 2008, but I feel this deserves wider dissemination, as it keeps happening.

concerning "What's the Caption? Wednesday"
Krissy and I have decided to invite one guest judge from JLand periodically to get a fresh mind on the panel. You should see the judges squabble each week! LOL It is no easy task!
Why do we only have three or four captions to vote on? If there are anymore it would become too complicated. We want this to be fun and run once a week. If we listed all captions, it would go on longer than a week, and wouldn't one only vote for their own caption?
I will be posting a picture tomorrow morning. Do have FUN and remember it is just a game. Thanks so much. Val and Krissy =)

Feature Focus: Adding Slideshows to your entry
As of now, AOL Journals allows you to use slideshows from many different places:
- The built in slideshows, including the "classic" style, and the "Woohoo" style slideshows. Much has been commented on these before, but you can get to them when you click "Add Album". This is the most easy way to embed photos.
- Embed a slideshow. Simply put, you go to another site to create a slideshow, then add that slideshow to your journal entry. It requires "cut and pasting" of code to make work - something that you can get used to doing pretty quickly.
Slideshows that offer embed options:
Bluestring.com allows you to create slideshows that contain Photos, Videos and Music. If have not used Bluestring, read the one page tutorial first.
Rockyou.com offers a bunch of slideshow options - here you can have simple ones that slide photos, to ones that add effects like snow flakes falling.
Photoshow.com offers both Video and Photo slideshows. It has a very easy interface to create a slideshow, and then embed it into your journal.
Yourminis.com has two widgets - One for AOL Pictures and one for flickr, that allows you to view your photos from either site. It's a very simple slideshow, which makes it very powerful.
Slide.com, an early provider of slideshow widgets, is much like RockYou.com, offering some fancy styles for your photos.
Now the how...
With all of these slideshows that allow you to "embed", you need to first go to the site (such as bluestring.com), create your slideshow, then embed the show into your entry. This can be tricky at first, but you can easily get the hang of it after a few trys.
All you need to do is 1) Copy the "Embed" code from the slideshow you have created and 2) In your entry, put the entry into HTML mode, then paste the code into the entry. Be sure to flip the entry back to Text mode if you want to keep adding words to your entry.
I'll give some follow up examples of slideshows created in each service, so you can see.

Guest Editor Picks 04/25/2008
Koda and me are so thrilled to be the Guest Editors for the week of 04/25/2008!! Thank you Vish and Magic Smoke for this wonderful honor.
Briefly, I'm Betty, I've been blogging off and on for about 3 years, my first journal was Of Minipaws and Menopause; then my next one was A Corgi In Southern California, then I took a break from journaling for 15 months due to some family stress, but in December of this past year Koda and me came back with Koda's Corgi Tales. We've had fun reconnecting with old friends and finding some new journals too. We live in Southern California close to the beach but next month are moving inland about 45 miles away from where we live now due to my husband getting a new job. In my journal I write a lot about my faith, I love the Lord, and silly things Koda does. He is one spoiled corgi pup.
Here are my picks for the week. I follow so many different journals and all of them are my favorites. I like names of journals; the unusual ones intrigue me, some of my picks are because of their names, some of them just because I like the journals and the people who write them. All the journals I read, I'm so honored to be able to be a part of their lives.
I started following Kelli's NoonMom journal back in the summer of 2006, she is a mom with 3 teens and her husband served in the military. She is active with supporting the troops in her local town and making quilts for troops being deployed. She is funny and candid and recently took us on a road trip throughout the country and world where she picked up various J-Landers in her RV and yacht.
Laini at Love From Iraq is a new journal I started following about 2 months ago. Late one night I happened to look on the Journal Main page and saw her journal in one that was recently updated. Intrigued by the name, I clicked it on and became an avid follower since then. Her husband is currently serving in Iraq, is home on leave until next week, and both of them are very much in love with each other and devoted to each other plus share a wonderful faith. I have learned so much about her religion as she is so open to share it with others.
Lucille at Day-to-Day-Life-by-Lucille4364 intrigued me with her name of her journal because my mother-in-law's name is Lucille. This Lucille is a delightful older woman, I'll let her tell how old she is, who talks to her readers when she writes her entries and includes each of us in her entries often. I like to read about her life with her husband and their dog, Spunky.
Mark over at Stars Like Grains of Sand in My Pocket writes very insightful, deep entries about his life. He was a former professional fighter and is currently getting ready to leave a relationship. I always have to read his entries twice to fully understand what he's saying; I like that, it makes me think and he usually gives me something to think about long after I'm done reading his journal.
Sherry at Sherry's Weight Loss Journey is very motivational in her weight loss efforts and doesn't let anything get her down in pursuing that goal. If she gains, she doesn't stress about it, if she loses she's happy about it. I like that attitude and the great fitness and weight loss tips she gives. She is also busy raising 3 teens and taking care of her elderly father. Always a delightful read.
Monica over at Mamarazzi's is a professional photographer with her husband, Sonny. This journal is where she displays her awesome photos and runs her photo challenge "Every Picture Tells A Story". She is currently on vacation til next week visiting her sweet grandchildren, but challenges will be resuming the first part of May. Her pictures are breath-taking to view.
Thank you for letting me be part of this wonderful experience. To each journal that I follow, thank you for allowing me into your life.

Feature Spotlight: Video Blogging
You can do this in three ways:
1) Upload a video from your machine. Maybe you went to a party, and have a video to share. Upload, and after a few minutes it will appear in your blog!
2) Embed. This is a technical term but means adding a video you've seen from another site (like youtube) to your blog.
3) Finally, you can record directly from your web cam. This is really fun. Imagine giving your bloggers an update but instead of it being written, they see you! The video below is an example. Practice will make perfect with this feature, but just imagine what you can try and do here!
Update: Joe wrote "How to" guides on video blogging that cover some of the comments left in this entry. See "How to embed videos from Youtube" and "How to add webcam video"
Enjoy!

Guest Editor Pick for 4/18/2008
Hello everyone! I'm thrilled to be this week's guest editor. My name is Missie. My journal is called Missie's Upside Down World. Here's the link: Missie's Upside Down World
I just turned 40. I've been married for 19 years and I have two teenagers. My son is 15, and my daughter will be turning 18 in a few days and graduating from high school in 8 short weeks.
I also have a Pug named Maizy, a Yorkie named Oliver, a black cat named Merlin and a tortoise shell cat named Mona.
I started journaling here on AOL during my mother's second battle with breast cancer. It was a stress reliever to be able to write the things I couldn't say out loud. As time went on, it became an outlet to write about my son who suffers from Arnold Chiari Brain Malformation and then last year, my daughter who was hospitalized for Anorexia.
This journal has been a blessing to me in more ways than just one. I've saved a lot of money on therapy by writing in this journal and I've made some awesome friends here in J-land.
I named my journal "Missie's Upside Down World" because when you read my journal, you understand my world is upside down dealing with a husband, 2 teenagers and 4 animals who run the house.
My job as guest editor is to pick out and highlight some of my favorite journals that I think everyone would enjoy reading. This was a hard task. A lot of you have already been highlighted by a guest editor, but after some searching back through guest editor entries, I have found a few good journals that deserve being mentioned.
1. Sunkissed This is a fairly new journal. I love this journal because this young woman suffers from an eating disorder like my daughter. Reading Jennifer's journal, helps give me insight as to what type of thoughts and feeling are going through my daughters mind.
2. MySouthernHome Sonya is just a delight to read. She writes daily about her life as wife, mom to a teenager and her career. Sonya's husband loves to cook and she's always sharing great recipes. Right now, Sonya's family is the middle of a big move!
3. Treasure Chest Full of Life Joyce has become a wonderful J-land friend to me. She and her family have had a rough year. She's a terrific wife, mother and grandmother. Joyce's journal is private, but I'm sure if you email her and mention I sent you, she'll add you as a reader.
4. Just Getting It off My Chest! Yes, Diama! She is one sassy young woman from Philadelphia. She's dealing with a life threatening disease, but that hasn't stopped her from doing what she wants. I love reading her journal.
5. Adventures From Florida Actually, this journal is now called Adventures from Florida to Kentuckiana. Lisa's journal is private, but I'm sure if you emailed her and mentioned me, she would gladly add you as a reader. Lisa and her family just made a huge move from Florida to Kentucky last year. Lisa is a work from home mom with 3 kids, two dogs and I believe a cat. Can't forget her hard working husband either. Lisa's journal is always a pleasure to read because I don't think she's ever had a bad thing to say about anyone!
So, there you have it. My five picks for this week.
Happy reading!
Missie:)

Ghost Stories
Regina is collecting ghost stories. If you have one to share, why not pop along to her journal and drop her a line.
Challenge Yourself Challenge!
Thursday is now officially "Challenge Yourself Challenge!" Day. Each week I will present a challenge that you can challenge yourself with. The only judge is YOU. You decide if you want to participate, and you decide if you have lived up to the challenge. You also decide if you won! And if you did, I hope you will share it with us. Sharing keeps you accountable!
Here is how it will work. Each week I will present a new challenge. If you decide to participate, snag the tag below and add it to your sidebar. Then post a comment below and state your intent to participate. Include a link to your journal below. Then in your journal write about your commitment and the journey you follow in its pursuit.
If you feel you have succeeded then e-mail me or post a comment below or at Inspirations and I will highlight your success in the next posting of the "Challenge Yourself Challenge".
Before I state this weeks challenge I would first like to thank Donna over at "This and that and hockey!" for creating this sidebar tag for me.
Now for the challenge! The last two weeks over at Inspiration we have been talking about that voice in side your head that convinces you that you can't succeed. This week I asked my readers to spend two days and write down all of the negative things that their Gremlin said to them. Now that you have a list, pick the top five things that your Gremlin says and re-write them. Use your own words, and imagination as to what you would say to it.
Here are some of mine:
I think you get the picture. And speaking of pictures....
I would also like you to draw your Gremlin. I do not challenge anyone to try anything that I have not done or tried myself so, I will share my Gremlin with you. If you would like to share your Gremlin with everyone else and have it posted please e-mail it to me as a .jpg file. Only you know what your Gremlin looks like. You don't have to be an artist!
And here she is:
So the recap is:
Snag the tag and add it to your page.
Challenge yourself! Correct five of the negative statements that your Gremlin says to you and draw a picture of him, her or it! I look forward to seeing your pictures!
If you haven't been following the entries just stop by Inspiration and catch up. It shouldn't take long.
Enjoy and I wish you much success!

Feature Spotlight: Mobile Blogging
One very good feature of AOL Journals is the ability to submit posts using your mobile device and by email. It's been covered before by Joe, but I thought I'd highlight it again.
A real example is when I traveled to Europe in the past 2 weeks, I was able to do blog posts without sitting at my PC at home. I did this by using the Mobile Blogging feature. See my entries on my blog here, the past 2 weeks have used this feature.
What does it do?
MoBlogging allows you to submit posts, videos and photos to your blog. It will assign you a special email address. When you use this email address from your phone, you can easily write blog entries "on the go". In addition, since MoBlogging gives you an email address, you can add blog entries using anything that can send to an email address. It's really simple!
What does it allow?
You can write new posts and the post can contain photos and even videos. These should all show up in the blog post.
How can I use it?
Goto "Edit Journal"
Then select "Moblogging - Post to your Journal on the go"
You'll get an email address. Use this email address to add new posts.
E.g. if you take a photo on your phone, and want to submit it, simply send it to the email address assigned to you.
Give it a try!
