The Great Winter Storm of Naught-7

Hi folks -- here in the DC area, we're digging out from the Great Winter Storm of Naught-7, where we got up to two whole inches of snow and ice yesterday.

There is a lot of ice out on the roads, though, so I saw my share of cars facing the wrong way and off the shoulder and such.

I would try to get you some pictures of campus, except my camera kind of died. I have an older one in my desk, the battery of which lasts for 15 whole minutes at a time, so that may be my fallback.

In the meantime, I'm looking at some workarounds that involve group participation, which I will get to this afternoon.

Thanks -- Joe

Ah, heck, the ice was at least bad enough to let kids off from school for a while, and, actually, spending a couple hours playing in what snow remained with kidlet and dog, was not for naught:)  (Beats being my neighbor who slide his van into another car.)  -- Robin

Hey 2 parts to my letter:

Joe:
I just wanted to alert you and all your blog friends what happened to me last Tuesday. A full story here, and I hope you all heed what happened.

1. Back in December I was shut down by aol, and told that I had sent out a bulk mail of 685 pieces. Absolutely false. They told me I was put on six months probation. Imagine the shock I got out of that discussion. They only told me that about the bulk mail, which was an absolute falsehood by AOL. I have had my journals here since 23 April 2005. As of last Tuesday, it had reached over 42,000 hits. That is a mighty fine achievement, and you made me one of the six picks last June 8th, which the local press covered, as you were made aware.

2. On tueday last, January 16th I was hit again. I was simply writing a single email out to a friend. Previously earlier in the day, I had brought up the AOL FONT pages, trying to change them over. I had checked several such fonts on several different pages. I didn't see those pages again that day, not even at the foot of the screen, as would be when minnmized. All of a sudden, I was blasted on the screen with many of those same pages (I assumed anyway) and lost my aol for final.

3. I called AOL and was told that I was permanently terminated.  One can only imagine how that went over. The person I talked with said I could appeal, and gave me the information, address etc.  I immediately wrote up a letter, went right over to overnight FED X..send it and it was delivered the next morning.  No Response from AOL.

4.  I called AOL, the gal told me they (community Action Team) would probably reinstate me, as I had been with AOL for 11 years...it didn't happen.

Part #2 Joe:

5.  I called AOL and talked with the CAT person, who told me- he was the third person from India- that AOL had not given me the full number of warnings, before terminating me.  That I could write another letter of appea. Did it all again, hand delivered via FED X- that letter too was delivered to Dulles, Va. next morning (Friday the 19 Jan.)

I have not heard a single word, about what I had done wrong, or anything, but was told that I was terminated forever..can you believe it? One would think that AOL would be able to discern exactly what happened on my side of the issue...but they just don't care about us out here..Does anybody think I would take a chance in doing something stupid, and to possibly loose my blog, especially?? Nonsense..Joe, sorry but being allowed only 2000 didn't allow me more..

Two inches in D.C.?  Um, okay.  I remember being in D.C. once when it was about 10 degrees and the homeless were hanging out over grates to avoid freezing to death.

Meanwhile, we got 2 inches in Tucson last night.  Now, that's news!  I don't think I'd seen snow on the ground in five years.

Hi Missy -- I've forwarded this to the Journals tech folks to take a look -- I'll let you know what I hear back.

Thanks -- Joe (posted & mailed)

Wish we had snow here in Scotland. It's cold enough, but now sign of the soft white stuff Joe!
BTW In 2006 I set up a directory of AOL journals, following in Pam's footsteps, since she is no longer with us. It is still growing daily! I wonder if you would give it a bit of advertising in your blog, to let new bloggers out there know how to find journals to read,
Thanks
Kate.

I'm actually curious to hear how cmarkswim's case turned out.  This has happened to me in the past, albeit I didn't have an aoljournal "blog" at that point.   It was not handled well at all.  -- Robin
