Guest editor, me??

When i was asked if I would like to be the guest editor of
the week, I had to think about it for all of 5 seconds before mailing
back my answer,YES PLEASE.  What an honour, thank you magic smoke.

For those who don't know me I, am Mort, I write a journal, caring and sharing. I live in North Norfolk  in the UK. I am male, 55, and am a full time
carer for my elderly mum. She is 87 and suffers with severe arthritis. I
am also in ill health, I have suffered with a bad back for many year, had
a disc removed, also have arthritis, and on dec.21st last year  i was
finally diagnosed with MS, having  had symptoms  for 8 years. I
started writing  my journal 1 year ago in October, as a means to let off
steam, I was waiting for a carers assessment, long overdue. I remember
sitting at the keyboard thinking, what can I write?  Who on earth will
read such drivel. One year on I am guest editor, having  made many
lovely new friends in Jland. Thank you all who visit and leave
comments. They mean a lot  to me.

As is the norm I shall now pick those journals that I
either enjoy the most , or feel deserve more comments than they get.
Please go visit them, leave a comment, and would those picked kindly do
the same. Thank you.

Lucy,of day-to-day-life-by-Lucille4364 is
a lovely lady,78 years young. She has been a great support  to me with
my MS, as she lost her beloved son Alan to complications from it,she
also has a tribute journal to him telling of his struggle with this
vile disease,at
My son, his struggle with MS. Her journal is a homely mix of news about her family, and husband Joe,and spunky  a very itchy dog. lol.

Indigo of Raven's Lament is
to me, one of my favourite journals. Please  if you have never read
it,you really should. Thanks for all the lovely comments, Indigo.

Next is
Beth  of
Nutwood Junction. Her
journal is a joy, well written, with many fantastic photos. Well worth a
visit.

Sybil is a lovely lady, her journal of village life is one i
enjoy a lot it  is called  just
Sybil . She would love you all to visit, I am sure.

Jaynee, my lovely friend, her  journal Single Girl is
a joy. Jaynee is a lovely, giggly lady who loves PINK. Be
warned..lol.

I also  enjoy Kelly's  journal, which seems to get
not that many comments, go and see what  you all think. She is well
worth  the effort.
Pride and Prejudice is her  journal.

Now that  is 6, but  I want  to  also  mention
the lovely  Zoe (Domestic Chaos). As many  of you know, sadly,  her beloved  dad  is
dying  from lung cancer. You are in my thoughts, Zoe

Also, very quickly, because I am taking  liberties now, lol, the following are well worth a read. June  of Midnight, Jeanette of Jeannette's Jottings, Mary of  Just MaryJane, battling  bravely against  cancer of A journey of another kind, Jan  of  Serendipity, and so many, many  more.

You have all welcomed me to Jland, become  my friends, and
shared  my thoughts and sometimes tears. I thank you all for making  me
a part of it.

Take care all.

Gratefully,

MORT

Hi, Krissy here.  I hope you all are having a good weekend!  I'm here to bring you another "What's the Caption? Wednesday" poll.

But first I wanted to thank all of you who participated by submitting a caption this week!  I'm glad we had such a good response!

So now let's get to the fun part - choosing your favorite caption out of the five listed below.  And yes, we do have five to choose from this week.  There were so many submissions, and good ones at that, that the judges chose to include five captions in the poll.  So please scroll down completely to check out all five captions before casting your vote!

But before you vote, let me give you the rules real quick.  We want the most popular caption of the poll below to win.  Vote only once.  Consider the caption, not the author of the caption.  And please nobody campaign for votes! You are on your honor.

Please remember you have until 9 AM Tuesday, EDT, to vote.  That's Tuesday morning at 9, Eastern Daylight Time.

On Tuesday, after the votes have been officially recorded, the winner will be announced here in Magic Smoke.

Now it is up to you to choose the winner!  Go and vote!

Guest Editor Picks - 8/22

Hello J-Land. Today you have to put up with me as your Guest Editor.  I will
keep this short so stay with me.

I started blogging before AOL introduced Journals.  So, I've been around the
Blogging world for quite some time.  On August 3, 2003 I entered my first post
on my first AOL Journal.  I'm so glad I did. Here's where you can find me.

My
Take On Life
This is the journal that started it all.
Kitchen Chatter
Dreams of a Hippie Farmer Wanna Be
The View From My Cube
Bare Bones Living

As you can see I am all over J-Land. Some journals
are updated less frequently than others but I do keep up with all of them!

Also, Kitchen Chatter
is a community journal for all the foodies out there.  Come visit the kitchen
and bring a snack :-)

Now we all know that AOL doesn't have the best journal application in town,
but it's not about that.  Sure we get frustrated when they lose pictures, posts
and eat videos.  But, through it all we stick around because of the friendship.
Friends that are hard to come by.  Friends that have stuck with us through the
tough times and helped us celebrate the good times.

I could  list my favorite journals, but that's impossible.  All the
journals I read are my favorite.  If they weren't, I wouldn't read them.
Instead I just want make a list of some of the friends I've made in J-Land.  Of
course they have journals and I hope you stop by and say Hi to them.  J-Land if
full of great folks if you just take the time to get off the information super
highway and take a slow drive down the road less traveled.

Here's to 5 years in J-Land!!!!!  I hope we can have at least 5 more fabulous
years.

Now, on to the list.  There is no rhyme nor reason to the order of this
list.  This is not a complete listing, but more of a sampling from the
J-Land Buffet. To be precise, it's a Baker's Dozen!

This is not everyone, that's for sure.  I did not list friends with private
journals.  I had to stop here or the list would go on and on.  Stop by my
journal and you'll find more of my friends listed in the side bar.  Just look
around and take the road less traveled.  You won't be disappointed.

J-land is 5 today!

Today
five years ago, AOL launched AOL Journals, now called Blogs. It was the
foundation stone for what we know as J-land today.

Go to the Anniversary
Journal
and make an entry or comment on this momentous
occasion, if you haven't already done so.

Don't
forget there is an anniversary chat in the Journals Chatroom (link
above every AOL blog) at 1900 GMT (8pm UK time, 3pm EDT) on Saturday 23
August, as well as at 2200 GMT (11pm UK, 6pm EDT) - in fact you can
have a J-land chat any time you want in there.

~ Five Years Strong ~

                       DsDesignsJLand5Years.gif picture by 55hockeyfan            DsDesignsJLand5Yearssmall.gif picture by 55hockeyfan

Wow!  Hard to believe JLand has been around for 5 years.  Even harder to believe those that have been around that long.  Me personally, I've only been around a few years.  In those years JLand has helped me grow.  I found new things about myself, new friendships, new support.  It's like a second home.   I've heard many say the same thing.  In years past I did a sidebar graphic for the celebration.  I thought I'd do it again, feel free to snag.  Please don't resize, I've done two, and both should fit without any editing.   I have the larger of the two on mine to give you an idea.  This is not a graphic to say you've been in JLand for 5 years, but more to celebrate the community has been around 5 years.  Growing each year.

Hugs

GUEST EDITOR PICKS 15/8

Photobucket

Hello, my name is Jeannette and quite a few of you will already know of me. I am delighted and honoured to be your Guest Editor this week. I live in the South East of England about forty miles from London.

I am married to Michael whom I refer to on my journal as “him indoors”. I have one married Daughter and two adorable Grandsons. I have been writing in J-Land for over four years. My main journal is  Jeannette's Jottings

My second journal is  Through A Dog's Eyes  which is the story of  our Border Collie told "in his own words".  I have also set up three other shared journals that everyone can post in and they are These We Have Loved  which is a memorial blog for those dear ones we have lost, Silent Keyboards - J-Land Angels 2  a tribute journal to our departed friends in J-Land and finally Make 'Em Laugh a little bit of fun with jokes, cartoons, funny signs or anything humorous that people would like to share.

Now you know about me, it is time to announce my Guest Editor's picks.

It is very hard to select a handful of journals from the very many  that exist, everyone of them special in its own right.  So, I have opted to go for some lesser known journals,  blogs that I have come to like very much.

My first choice is a lovely lady named Freda. She is about the same age as myself and lives in Cambridgeshire.  She writes about her day to day experiences and living life in her own way and celebrating her retirement.  Her link is - Now I'm Retired....... :-D

Her other journal is a fascinating trip down memory lane. When young she worked in a hotel and met many people from the stage, silver screen, television and even royalty. She kept a daily diary of those times and the celebrities she met throughout  the late fifties and most of the “swinging sixties” and is sharing those diaries with us here at Freda's Diaries

My second choice is Morton or Mort as he prefers to be known. Mort is a gentleman of middle years, he has recently been diagnosed with MS and is having a struggle coming to terms with it. It is harder on him because he is also a full-time carer to his Mother. However, he stays as upbeat as possible in the circumstances. He grows vegetables and flowers and shares beautiful photos of them on his journal which is - Caring And Sharing

My third choice is Laini. I am a fairly new reader of hers but already I am becoming a fan. On one of her journals she writes about her husband Mark’s deployment to Iraq and how this affected them both, her struggles with depression and how she worked her way through it.  Mark added to the journal from Iraq whilst Laini tried to keep her life in Virginia as normal as she could, her link is  - Love From Iraq

Her second journal tells of how they met, their courtship and Mark’s battle with cancer - We Made Our Own Huppah

My fourth choice is Leigh. He lives in Wales. He was born with cerebral palsy which gives him some disability but he has never let this stand in his way. He is an example to other disabled young people. He has been sharing with us his education, his challenges, his holidays and his family life. Only yesterday he got the good news that he has passed his exams and will be going on to college! We have watched Leigh grow into a fine young man and I congratulate him on his achievements  - Leigh's World

My fifth choice is Joan who lives in Scotland. She writes of being retired, footloose and fancy free. She covers various topics and some of them include places of interest such as museums and art galleries, her day trips out with her husband, Stuart, his watercolour paintings, holidays and their shared hobby of bird watching and the Scottish countryside. She likes to reminisce and also likes to comment on the weather. Well, she is a Brit and with us it is a national pastime!  -  Joans Musings

My last choice is Pam or Ma as she is generally known. We have been readers of each others journals for a long time. Ma always starts her entries with uplifting quotes and bright sayings accompanied by sweet graphics. Her postings are always thoughtful and always from the heart. She has cheered me on many occasions. Her inspiring blog can be found here - Good Morning Sunshine !

So there are my choices. Six individuals, eight journals. As I said above, I have chosen, for the main part, some of the lesser known journals, those that deserve more readers, journals that are not well known or have been overlooked.

It has been a pleasure and a privilege to be your Guest Editor and I hope that you approve of my choices. Pay them a visit, I am sure that you will not be disappointed and you may well come to enjoy them as much as I do. Please call by and congratulate these lovely people. We all like to see new readers and the journals I have chosen certainly deserve to have more readers.  They will have the welcome mat out for you.

Now, with my thanks for being allowed to recommend some journals to you, I hand the baton on to the next Guest Editor.

God bless you all.

Decision Making 101

           Decisions.jpg decisions image by LABerger20

Making A Decision

Often times people have a very difficult time making a decision, and then once the decision is made they spend hours, days, or months second guessing themselves.

In 2000 I had been married for 14 years and living in our new house for eight years.  We had yet to buy furniture for our living room.  The decor was pretty much 1978 Salvage Yard.  When my friend offered to sell me her antique love seat and two arm chairs for $150.00 I jumped at the chance.  It was the closest thing I could find to what I had hoped to put in our living room.  (Now of course I can find what I want everywhere!)

Now a decision had to be made.  The furniture was in sad disrepair and needed to be refurbished.  I found a wonderful place that would come to the house with all their swatches.  Then once I made my decision they would take the furniture with them and bring it back when it was done.  I was excited.  My husband wasn't going to be home so he though that I should have a couple of friends over to "help" me decide what would look best.  So I called the girls, chilled the wine, and waited for the furniture guy.  We settled in while we were waiting and talked about all the fabric and colors I could go with.  The man arrived at 1:00pm, I told him what I as looking for and he showed me three swatches.  At 1:15pm he was walking out the door with the love seat and chairs, and the girls were sitting there with their mouths hanging open.  As the door closed, they looked at me, and in unison asked "how did you do that?"  "What?" I questioned.  "You just 'decided', just like that, in like five minutes" they asked perplexed.

So, I explained how I make a decision.

First and foremost the issue at hand must "feel" right.

I knew I had to get the chairs recovered.  I knew this man would do a good job at a fair price.

When you are going to make a decision, make sure if feels like it is the right thing to do.  You don't need to over think it, but you do need to listen to your heart.

Second, as best as possible try to have a clear idea of what the outcome of your decision will be.

I had spent years looking at furniture, fabrics, colors, and designs.  I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted the furniture to look like when it was done.

Think about all the outcomes that are possible.  Think about what you want to happen, and what could happen.  Decide how you will deal with the situation if it doesn't work out the way you want it to.

Third, do your research.

I had literally spent years looking for the furniture I wanted and it just didn't exist.  So I knew that the furniture before me was as near as I was going to get to what I wanted at the time.

While you are doing the second step, see if you can speak with others about the decision you are about to make.  If they have experience ask them to share it with you. Find out what challenges you may encounter and how you may need to prepare.  Be careful who you ask for input.  You want to make certain that they do not offer their opinion.  You are strictly seeking knowledge.

Fourth, weigh the pros and cons.

I could have waited longer, but after 14 years of marriage I wanted to have a nice living room.  This was a no brainer.

If you have a decision to make and you are feeling stumped, the best thing to do is get out a piece of paper, draw a line down the middle so that you have to columns, and write Pro and Con at the top of each column.  Then start writing.  List as many good reasons and bad reasons that you can find.  If you find that you are even,  you may want to assign a point value to each thing you have listed.  Then tally up the points and your decision should be more clear to you.

Fifth,consult the Divine.

If you are at all spiritual, here is where you would contact the divine.  Just prior to making that final decision.  Now many may say the process should begin with this, and it very well should if that is how you feel.  I usually play by the rule "God helps those that help themselves" so I do all the work and then say... "Hey, what do you think?"  Once you have all the information, spend some time in meditation.  Sit in stillness.  An answer will come.

Good Luck! And may all your decisions be made with wisdom.

In addition I deleted my original blog while trying to transfer over to Blogger ( It was 4am in the morning when I attempted that) Nuff said. LOL.

But Vish was on it she e-mailed me and said hey like what happen to your blog, there Chili.

I decided at that time to recreate a new blog with a more appropriate title reflecting it's contents. So here they All  are
