Guest Editor Picks 5/30/2008
What a wonderful week it has been. I was honored
when chosen to be the Guest Editor this week. And even though I knew it
would be a difficult task in picking just a few journals, it was still
a great honor.
My name is Hadonfield and I have been creating a
journal called The Hadonfield Myers
Experience since May of 2005.
In the 3 years that I have been a part of J Land, as we call it, I have
met some of the most wonderful people and have had the priviledge to
read so many wonderful journals. It has been such a great 3 years in
being a member of J Land. It has become like a family to me. And like a
family member, it is always there when you need a hug or a shoulder to
lean on.
I love to write about Inspiration and Life and
Love that stands the test of time.
These journals are like that in that they too
have inspired me to embrace life more and that they themselves has
stood the test of time.
I hope you will get a chance to check them out
for yourself.
Jude at My Way has both educated and entertained
me since the very first time I ever read her journal My Way. She is
such a classy lady that shares her knowledge of life, politics, and her
love for the great city of Chicago. I hope you will find her journal as
fascinating as I have over the years.
http://journals.aol.com/jmorancoyle/MyWay
Natalie from
Interface has been a source of information over the years that has made
me stop and think and ponder my current beleifs. Interface is
a great journal that I know you will enjoy reading. When the word
doesn't make sense anymore, turn to Nat. That will clear everything up
for you.
http://journals.aol.com/lurkynat/Interface
Allison from
Allisons Corner has been a source of inspiration for me for a very long
time. Her entries are always positive and uplifting. Seeing how she
handles may of lifes difficult situations helps me tohave the strength
to handle mine. For a good dose of daily sunshine, check her
out....
http://journals.aol.com/cuteallison1980/allisons-thoughts
Britt from Britts
Blog is another one of my favorites. She hales from the UK, but now is
calling Florida her home. Her English humor and compasion are a delight
to behold. Like an International coffee, she is Flavorful and
Delightful. You will enjoy her thoughts on Life and Love. If it sounds
like "your cup of tea", check her out
at:
http://journals.aol.com/ukgal36/Brittsblog
For an enjoyable and
inspirational read, I love to visit Dear Diary. Southernmush shares
with us her daily trials and tribulations as she goes about her journey
through life. Her strong committment to family always helps me to
realize how lucky I am to have a family as
well.
http://journals.aol.com/southernmush/DearDiary
And last, but never
ever least, is Amanda Trickey, who hales from Cinncinati. She is a
wonderful young lady who has went from a young girl to a young lady who
is about to be married. I enjoy reading her journal because it fills me
with such a sense of enjoyment. But I must warn you. Her humor is
contagious. Read along as she makes her way towards the Alter to start
her new life in marriage.
http://journals.aol.com/trickeytricky/CountryMyKindaWedding
Choosing just a few
journals from the several dozen that I read was alot harder than I
thought. Because all of the journals that I read on a regular basis
give me strength, bravery, motivation, inspiration, emotional hugs.
They lift me up, they embrace me and let me know that the world is
still a wonderful place to be. They challenge me, they make me stop and
question my thoughts. And very very often they make me chuckle and
forget my troubles when I need a lift. They are like a Family. To which
I am most fortunate and blessed to be a part
of.
I want to thank Vish for giving me an opportunity
to be the Guest Editor this week. It has been an Honor and a
Priviledge.
I hope that everyone has a wonderful and safe
weekend.............
And remember my favorite
saying:
"That which does not
kill us, only serves to make us
Stronger"

Journals update
Hi folks,
We updated Journals today with
a couple of user facing enhancements and some backend
changes.
1) Additional moods for your entry. This is available
for all English speaking locales (US, UK, CA) and Latino.
2)
A new link called What's Hot.
2) OpenID support for
comments.
So, we finally got around to putting in
more moods so you can better express your state of mind
:)
The What's Hot link is a
product of AOL called Mgnet (pronounced Magnet). This is an intelligent
recommendation engine that brings you stories/articles that you
like. You just have to seed it with some starting
points which are as easy as clicking on some pictures to indicate the
kind of articles you like to read. The engine then learns from your
choices and brings you more of what you like. The more you use it, the
better it gets. Please give it a try.
These guys sit next to our team and they
would welcome any feedback you may have.
As I had mentioned previously,
you can now use your OpenID to post comments to an entry. The promise
of OpenID is to be able to use a single user name and password to
sign-in across the web (that is, wherever OpenID is
supported). The OpenID provider (AOL, myopenid.com,
blogger.com) will validate your credentials and you will be redirected
back to the web site where you came from.
A good web
site to try this on, would be livejournal.com.
LiveJournal has a sign-in link for OpenID at the top right of the page.
If you click that link you will be asked to enter your
OpenID. In the box enter this url "http://openid.aol.com/YourScreenName"
(your screen name and without the quotes). Be sure you put in your
screen name. In my case I would put in
"http://openid.aol.com/vishy2004". You
will then be redirected to the AOL sign-in page where you will be asked
to authenticate. After successfully signing in, you will be sent back
to the LiveJournal page. Now you are signed in to LiveJournal using
your OpenID.
Similarly,
a Blogger user who wants to leave a comment, will be challenged with
the AOL sign-in screen. On that page they will notice a tab for OpenID
(the orange color tab on the far right). When the Blogger user clicks
on the OpenID tab, they will be asked to enter their OpenID. For
Blogger users their OpenID would be of the form
YourBlogName.blogspot.com (for example, one of my test blogs on blogger
is journalsopenid.blogspot.com). Once you enter this information, you
will be taken to the Bloggger sign-in screen where your credentials
will be validated. After successful validation, you will be be sent
back to AOL where you will have to fill out a small form where you will
be asked a couple of questions, one of which is your age (this is to
comply with Child Protection laws). Upon filling out this form
successfully (only a one time thing), you will go to the Comments page
where you can leave a comment.
For this update,
OpenID for comments is available for US journals
only.
More on
OpenID
AOL is an OpenID provider, in that, if you
have an AOL or AIM screen name you automatically get an OpenID. For
example, my OpenID would be http://openid.aol.com/vishy2004. In
fact your OpenID could be your journal name (in my case it would be
http://journals.aol.com/journalseditor/magicsmoke).
It can also be an abbreviation of your journal name like
http://journals.aol.com/journalseditor.
So, whereever it asks for an OpenID you can enter any one of the 3
options I mentioned above.
For more on OpenID click here.
Please give this a try
and let me know if you have any
issues.
Every Day Hero's
I found this inspiring story and wanted to share it with everyone here in J-Land. Please forward this information to as many people as possible.
Many times we hear of the horrible situations kids are living in, or have died in, because of child abuse. There are so many times that I wish there was something I could have done. I know people who work in the system that tries to protect these children. They work hard, long hours. They are overworked and under paid and still they try their best. They need help. You can make a difference. You can help end child abuse and keep kids safe.
There is a group called CASA, Child Appointed Special Advocates that trains people to work with these children and help protect them. The training only takes 30 hours and the time commitment is 10 hours per month. If you have been considering any kind of volunteer work I urge you to look into this opportunity. For more information watch the video clip below and then visit this web site http://www.nationalcasa.org/index.asp. I certainly plan on it.

How to create a blog dashboard, using AOL Journals and myAOL
Using myAOL, you can create a page just the way you want it - it's easy to customize, move around content and add new widgets (like the Gas Price one described below).
Here's the 3 steps to start your "dashboard"
1) Goto the AOL Journal you want to add to your myAOL page
Click on the "Feeds" link - it's in the right hand corner
2) You'll see the dialog below.
Click on the "myAOL" button to add this blog to your myAOL page.
3) Now you will see a message that looks like the one below (except it will
show the last updates to the blog - the one below shows Magic Smoke)
This has been added to the myAOL page.
Click "myAOL" and you will see the widget added to your page.
To goto your dashboard, simply enter http://my.aol.com
That's it. Let me know if you have more questions!
--Will @ Willspeaking.com
Feature Focus : Dashboard for Blogs and a Gas Price Widget on myAOL
It can be used as a dashboard to quickly scan the headlines of your
favorite blogs. You can add your own blogs or other peoples. On my
page, I have the headlines from my favorite blogs and scan them at least twice a day.
But my personal favorite is the Gas Price Widget, This shows the cheapest gas price in your area. With gas prices over $4, I like to know the cheapest place.

Friday Blogplugs - 5/23
Hi folks,
Hope you guys are getting ready
for the long weekend. The office is empty but here I am, (blog)plugging
away :). By the way, next week you should be seeing
some changes in Journals, specifically, OpenId
support and more moods. The implication of OpenId support is that folks on
Blogger do not have to get AOL/AIM screen names for leaving comments.
I will provide more details when this
happens.
informs
us that Judith Heartsong's essay contest this month is about
"Animals" and urges us to participate. In another post, she is probing
the depths of her emotions while trying to understand the meaning
of life.

Guest Editor Picks 5-23-08
First off, I would like to Thank Vish for the invitation and
opportunity to seize the Guest Editor position for one week, it shall
be my honor.
My name is Rebecca, and I have claimed the journal ~In The Shadow Of The
Iris~ since November of 2004. The
sheer fact that I'm still around after all these years should qualify
me as an Old Timer. I can actually say, "I remember when AOL
journals....." and back it up with stories of dial up disappearing
entry disasters, no entry spell checks, zero advertisements, and an
About Me sidebar with only enough room for 200 characters
<gasp>
Since there seems to be two sides to every coin in life, I started a
second journal a year ago to catch what I'll deem, random writings of
the undefined sort. This side of the coin can be located, heads up, at
~Lavender
Black~ I'll let my two journals and their
differences speak for themselves at this point in
time...................
As
I imagine anyone in this position would say, picking only a handful of
journals to feature is akin to picking a favorite child out of your own
children, it goes against my internal grain. But rules are rules, and
in no particular order, nor reflection of all the journals I read on a
regular basis (and it helps that many of my favorite journals have been
already featured in the past months) I shine light on some writers that
all carry their own unique voice within our
community.
Marc located at Sober Gay Poz
Ex-Con is a writer with an array of
topics splashed across his pages. He often tackles subject matter in an
authentic, no holds bar manner. He writes with honesty, humor and I
consider him a very talented writer. He writes virtually every single
day, which is dedication if I've ever seen it. Marc is also the artist
of Hy-art, a visual aspect of his journal I enjoy again and again.
Robin weaves from the canvas of Random
Threads . Honestly, I never know what
she's going to write about. Everyday meanderings, political movements,
a meme I pretend I never noticed <wink> and life itself.
When I read her journal, I get the feeling I'm chit-chatting with a
friend over coffee. She's very clever and I can always appreciate
someone who keeps me on my reading toes.
Betty's journal of Creativity--Bits and
Pieces is a place of beauty and grace.
Her entries are short, enchanting and a journey through the mind and
design of an artist. I've been a quiet observer of her talent,
organization and observations for a long time now. She posts regularly
and if you have a love of photography, following her path is sure to
inspire.
Sandi resides in the land of Life Is Full Of
Surprises . She maintains an eclectic
array of entries which cover just about any topic we can think of. Some
days I'll read her original prose, a rant about politics, a piece about
humanity, a day in her life, and entries that remind me to think about
the bigger picture in life.
In every group, there should be at least one smart backside ( I would
type the other word, but I don't want my Guest Editorship revoked on
the first day) and that person would be Dan,
from The Wisdom of a Distracted
Mind . He says his journal is fat free, but I
consider his daily postings filled to the brim with fatty wit,
interesting observations and sometimes jaw dropping facts about the
world we live in. His journal is a guaranteed smile.
The last journal I would like to encourage everyone to visit is by
Judith, at the beautiful canvas of Judith HeartSong .
Beyond being a beautifulspirit and writing almost daily of her world,
she offers a monthly community based Artsy contest for all to enter.
She provides a topic, a group of judges reviews everyone's entries and
the one that sparkles the most wins a beautiful original piece of
artwork from Judith. It's that simple and what a wonderful way to
showcase everyone's journals. The May essay contest is already under
way...................
I hope everyone has a beautiful week, filled with extraordinary.

I hope you find one or more that is new to
you and go
around and give them
a nice J-Land 'Hello'

Rebecca,
is a very sweet gal.You can call her Journey
,
if you'd
like. She is from Ohio, just like me.
She visited my
journal and fell in love with a tag I did with
a country home and
said if she could get a home in the country
it would look just
like that, would I please put Journeyz
Dreamon
it.
So I did,
and made other ones for her also.
She has a
very busy life even though
she
has some medical problems.
Please stop by and get to know
her.
I'm
sure you will like her and become fast friends.

I had
picked Chuck
and then when I went to the test
journal ,I saw the
guest editor before me had also
picked him .But I am am still including him, as
he deserves
another
plug.
I saw a comment
Chuck had left someone,so I had to go see
who this
was....and he had me laughing from the get-go.
He also dabbles
(dribble and dabble,LOL) in art and he wears
many painters
smocks,Piccaso,Monet,Worhol and some I
haven't
even discovered or is it he hasn't even
discovered yet?.
You have
to see for yourself. Here's the
link-

Donna is a new
'grandma' to baby Emma,whose mommy
she
took under her angel
wings when she was a child. So she is
'grandma' to new Emma.
Donna lives for the Lord.
I enjoy reading the
goings on in her life, as I am sure
you will
also.

June-Dear-Dear-
June
There is
alot to love about
June.
First
and foremost -she loves the Lord.
She has
been through a roller coaster life and has come
through it
with style, grace and a wonderful sense
of humor.
She cracks me up.But
she also keeps me grounded.
I keep
trying to convince her to have her
journal
published as a
book . June will
intrigue you.She will inspire
you to see life
differently....To live life with a happy heart.
June also
has a shared prayer journal.

Jenny
is a vivacious young gal from England and
foremost
she is the #1 Queen
fan --
(not the Queen mum,although I'm
sure she's quite
fond of her also) -.The rock group Queen!!
She also
loves other rock groups,Foo Fighters,Kaiser
Chiefs
and
many others.
She goes to lots of
concerts with her best buds .
Just sit
back and relax and read about her side
splitting
tales
of her good
times (and some not so good times)
.
She leaves you
waiting for the next chapter in the life
of
Jenny.

I sure hope that I
have put in a good enough plug for these
deserving J-Landers and lots
and lots of you pop in and
get to know them- I
know you'll be glad that you did.
Thanks for having
me !!
This was
fun
